Questions Re: Player(s) failing to shine & Skip Match Option

Any answers are appreciated:
1) What triggers a player to "make a talent break-through." I had 2 players get the message that they were about to make a break-through if they get a few more games. They both had super good form for the next few games but both ended up with a failure to shine when given the opportunity message.

2) The 2nd question is regarding what determines the line-up when I choose skip match. Does the computer automatically select based on form/fatigue/overall level?

Thx.

1) When they're about to make a breakthrough, the only think I've found that helps is scoring or getting an assist. Haven't had any defenders making the breakthrough yet, but had one that failed. It may be down to their match rating.

2) I'm assuming it's just your default lineup.

Thanks, may I have some blue meth?

1) I was thinking that, but that would suck for defenders, one of mine was a RB.
2) That's bad because I play ML in the English Championship and there are times when the games come quick and furious. I skip games to avoid doing legwork, but if I have to go to team mgmt every time to avoid bad form/fatigue, that defeats the whole purpose of skipping games and saving time.

I'm retired from the meth business now I'm afraid.... what with PES commitments and all.

1) I was thinking that, but that would suck for defenders, one of mine was a RB.

If your RB can play at RM, try playing him there, more chance of goals! That's what I did for my LB, got him a goal and assist which gave him the boost in 1 match.

Other than that, I guess just try to get a clean sheet, make sure that player makes plenty of passes etc, try to boost his match rating.

I don't skip matches so I'm only making an assumption with this, but it seems logical.

its bad enough off the pitch is unrealistic without skipping games, why would you skip games ? its about playing everygame so it feels real and your having your season play out the real way, if i skipped a game with barca on hardest setting then i'd win all the games i skip when truly i would rather earn them wins by playing the game properly. either do a ML in coach mode or do one playing the games not skip every now and then because you can't be arsed to play everygame!

In my experience, the only requirement for a player to "shine" and secure the stat boost is a match rating of 6.5 or higher. A goal will often guarantee a 6.5 minimum, even for a substitute; an assist will not, but seems to confer a 0.5 bonus.

It’s tough with defenders, especially when you’re playing with a weak team in a strong division on a higher difficulty level. The only time that I’ve had a player “fail to shine” was with a young CB who, despite ostensibly solid performances, only ever seemed to pull a 5.5.

I’ve had two defenders pick up the stat boosts since then, though, and it seems that you need a specific type of match to pick up good ratings across the back line: a clean sheet and a solid win (2-0 or better) where you actually spend most of the 90 minutes defending against wave after wave of attacks. This is easier against teams that favour a more direct style of play where they fire long passes to their forwards (by default, prior to managerial changes, Man Utd, West Ham, et al), and next to impossible against teams who attempt to bore you into inattention by passing the ball around at the back (I’m looking balefully at you, Swansea).

Failing that, and without cheating or otherwise cheapening your ML career, another way to force a CB shine instance would be to set the individual to go forward for corners, then engineer as many set pieces as you can in the hope that they’ll nick a goal.

If it does come down to ratings, I would say that the number of passes and touches matter. also successful tackles for defenders and shots on target for strikers matter as well. My LB had a rating of 7.5 when he had neither scored nor assisted a goal in the match. But he had made 4 successful tackles out of 5 attempted, 11(11) passes and had 2 crosses. I believe all the stats listed on the ratings>Individual match Performance page would be factored into the rating somehow. The AI cannot tell if you played badly or otherwise.

Huh. This is actually very interesting. This would explain why Januzaj is the only youngster I've had improve, as he gets the most touches. Will look out for this. Thanks.

I forgot to mention one thing though. It seems that if you lose the match, a negative number is added to the ratings (1 or even 2 for some players). So if you really want a player to shine, you need to do enough to get him a rating of 6.5 or above AND win the match.

I made an observation that if the rating is 6.5 the stats go up by 2 and if it was 7 they went up by 3. Can anyone please confirm/dismiss this observation?

What determines when a player is given his "chance to shine"?

Good question. I was wondering the same thing. I can't say for sure.
Also, could you tell me what was the oldest player that made a breakthrough for you? For me I think it was Castolis or Minandnho (both 20).

It does seem a bit random. I've had players at my team for years, putting in good performances, getting goals/assists etc.... no "chance". And then I've had players there for a matter of weeks, and they get their "chance". *shrugs*

23/24 I reckon. I don't think there's a limit as long as they're still developing.

I bought Varane on season 2, so he was 22 years old. Since then (3 seasons) he has had that super red arrow twice, and twice his overall got up by 4 points.

So yes, defenders can get it, older players can get it, and no, I don't think the rating influences the amount of points they improve. Also, different abilities improve the overall diferently. Varane improved mostly on Ball Winning and Header, while Martins Indi (who also had the super red arrow) improved mostly on speed, passing and physique.

I would say that is the training method that determines what goes up when they florish.

That is very informative, thanks. In my case, since I had everyone on 'Balanced' I'm not sure what improved.
I'm thinking about starting a new thread to ask about what sort of training strategies everyone uses. Would anyone like to participate in a discussion on training?

Reading all the various topics on this forum, I suspect that a chance to shine comes down to an large improvement in OVR rating perhaps?

I know a lot of people say overall doesn't make a difference, but depending on the position certain stats increase overall while others do not.

Perhaps training in certain categories trigger the cutscene.

I actually got my first cut scene yesterday. Zaha, surprisingly. Is he gonna have to play for him to develop because he's quite fatigued. His training is balanced, btw.

Rest him for a game and play him from the next one. But turn auto save off before you do it, why to risk it?

And continuing on my argument about rating being affected by everything and not just goals and assists, take a look at these screenshots. They're from a 1-1 draw with Chelsea on top player, I played as Wolves. Van Buyten's rating is an example of what I was talking about.

What do you people think?

In such games, that you play against a very strong opponent and end up splitting points, the defenders of the weaker team tend to be favoured in the ratings. But that one makes no sense at all. 9 touches: 3 passes with 100% accuracy, 3 clearances, 3 interceptions. I can't see where this is worth an 8. Even if that player stopped every attack, but didn't pass/etc, the Interception stat would be higher.

I honestly don't get that one
