Spamming of Speed Merchants/throughballs?

er yeah, no 4 cb's. Side backs are key. Flat back 4, attacking full backs. Don't get too proccupied with defense though as attack is a great form of defense. Use every option available. Like I said, pass assistance is evereything online.

I hear ya, but before I move away from focus on defending I'm going to experiment with a Sweeper a bit more, and possible three CBs and two SBs.

It shows Konami have no interest in making it a patient build up game when they invent the likes on van Der mirch, they've just no idea what they're doing. Lazy, one track minded & ignorant to what the fan base want.
Oh please, just do it,
buy Perea, what's the matter with you?

Good luck, only Juve play with 3 at the back though.

Well, this is different from Juve. It's actually five at the back because there are 2 SBs as well. Anyway, I'm willing to try anything if anyone has any other thoughts on how to combat this throughball to the speed merchants, and make the defence tighter all around. In general I find that there are too many goals in the game this year. Very few 1-0, 0-0 or 1-1 games for me. Or is that just an indication of me needing better defending/tactics?

Could be your defending. How I defend; If they play speedsters, I go with pacey defenders, I always have a 32 man squad. Super cancel is used a lot when catching the ball over the top and like you, press with cpu and cover with my cb unless they pass it around and you alternate. Have a cb good in the air for setpieces, he will clear most high balls. Stay compact, make them play down the wings in the final third, make them play towards the centre when in midfield where you have numerical advantage. Never chase them with 2 players unless you are doubling up on the wings. Get a good gk with stats of 90 in defense, gk skills and response, general stuff. And lastly, buy Perea. lol.

This might be a big help, though it seems to work well at times to press with two and I don't use it always. Also, yes, need to upgrade the GK. Currently using Sogrocan. Should get someone much better when I get the cash.

Thanks again, hopefully your advice has been of use to others as well...

I just make sure I have a deep defence usually changing my tactics to long ball and then just sit off tracking back when they are coming at you like you would defend in real life, rather than just rushing them speedsters and also try and double up with a midfielder while you are backtracking at a safe distance, not to close so he can easily outpace you or to far away, giving you enough time to bring over support. But if you haven't got capable defenders like the defaults in MLO you are pretty much fucked whatever you do. I have gave up on MLO because I was facing superstar teams all the time.

Be cautious even when your opponent has the ball in their own half bringing your wingers back and even chase back with your forwards to crowd the pitch as much as you can and just be aware to switch over to your defender when you can see a through ball on for your opponent.

You can defend much more accurately with the long camera rather than the wide what nearly everyone uses and attack also with more accuracy unless you don't play technical football and are always looking for the long ball, then long cam isn't for you.

Good idea. Will switch my CAM ASAP.

And yes, not pressing with two defenders was a huge improvement. I just played out a nil-nil draw! And against better opposition...

I think I was closing space too quickly, trying to win the ball back right away instead of hanging back and staying in shape. Need to jockey more and lunge in less.

Also, having five in defence is actually working well so far, especially combined with man marking of the central striker with your SW or central (dropped back) CB. Something some might want to try if you think it might help, especially when you come up against a really stacked side.

Anyway, thanks all(mostly Ronaldoughnut), I can feel a real transformation in my defence now. Much better.

When I anticipate a through ball is about to happen I press L1 and change to my CB and then run him back towards goal, I then Press square and get my DM usually to meet the passer of the ball. It hardly ever breaks past my CB that's run back towards goal, it's a really effective way to subdue people who through ball speed merchant abuse.

This man knows. You don't have to play with 3 CBs or buy Onouha or Perea, you just have to be alert as to when they might spring a ball over the top and make your CB take a step back (head start if you like)

I have Haangeland and Alex as my CBs and they are perfectly capable of scooping up these balls all day long. Some players will hardly get a shot in the whole game as this is the only way they know how to break through.

I've only just really mastered it recently to the extent I'm never really getting caught out and I'm reaping the rewards with the clean sheets.

Yes, pretty basic stuff.
Only good though if you have got capable defenders unlike in PES 2011 where if you did this you could defend with any crap defender.

Slow defenders though, you are going to get arse fucked by Ronaldo and co.

I agree. It's the method I use & now added in some man marking which I never used before, still don't always use it as like me plenty of people set up to attract the man markers the change formation in game to drag the defenders away.

Yeah i don't need amazing defenders to do this. I only got the game on Thursday so my master league online team is still pretty terrible. I was using Richard Harty as CB as much as I could as he had abit more pace than others. I was able to keep out quite a few teams with amazing players (Ronaldo, hulk, eto and co) Because this long ball/long passes is abit of a flaw with worse defences, people have become lazy, and have reverted to that every time - they run out of ideas when you try and actually play the ball, and they struggle to cope with you passing the ball around I've found. The L1 1-2 and the R2 when receiving control have really made passing more fluid and have the ability to turn a defender when playing with your back to goal.

What is a problem this year, is the shitty shitty keepers you start with, but everyone has to deal with it so it's not the end of the world.

But the match making, this is a huge problem.

Match team strength: YES
Match player rating: YES

Wheresmark Player rating 386 Random opponent rating 695
Wheresmark team strength 375 Random opponent strength 825

This is 8/10 matches... I don't understand, it's making it difficult for me to get going aswell.

And how have these guys got 25-30 20million + players in a month and a half :/

Don't search for similar ratings, just team strength. The search filter may place priority on rating rather than strength.

Anyway, I think most people on MLO have good teams by now so that may be why you play such good teams the majority of the time. It's quite easy to build up a super team.

I've got a 500 mil team, don't play coach mode, tournaments or the like. Around 150-200 quick matches over the past two months and that's it really.

I#m using it not everytime you have only to defend intelligent...

56 of 10 attacks don't come to goals if you have good defenders (like Hughes and Luiz) and do not attack as early as you can the most of people run to ronaldo and co u should wait and steal him the ball...

though id rather take someone spamming through balls for 90mins than some lagging out on the 85th min

This is what the game should be about. It's fun, van der mirk is the new mlo legend. He's not half as dangerous if you know how to defend properly. He used to be my pet hate but not anymore.

Now what is REALLY ruining the fun is as you said, these 900 rated quitters. I would rather play against 100 van der mirchs on the trot than have to put up with these spanish and italian cheats. It's about time konami established regional mlo. Have a european league and a southern european league where the spaniards and italians can quit on eachother until kingdom come.

This is not a xenophobic rant. I message everyone who has done this, and we all know it is deliberate 99% of the time, they are all spanish or italian.

You can speak for yourself on this one. Just look at how many people are fed up with Van Der Mirch on these forums... Really, it's a real problem, and it's not just that one player, it's the entire game in terms of tactics and the kind of football it rewards.

The fact that you used him yourself says a lot imo. And, for the record, there are people who are not terrible at the game put in countless hours trying to learn how to defend against these continued through balls to super-fast players and never really get there. I have given up after trying every possible combination of tactics and new ways of controlling players, including several suggestions you made, none of which worked for me.

It seems that the only real solution is to join them if you can't beat them, because hearing that you like using van der mirch yourself means to me that it might just be that I've been listening to advice from someone who is more a part of the problem than part of the solution. Keep in mind that if you spam VDM against someone and score a few cheap ones yourself, the game is often pretty much over by that point, so maybe it's not your "defending properly" that is so effective for you?

Also, if people are diconnecting from you, maybe it's because they can't stand the way you play the game? Just a thought...

Sorry, I know I'm probably seriously misunderstanding and jumping to conclusions, but this years' MLO has me extremely frustrated! It's pure garbage IMO, and I'm not touching it again until after the patch...

PEACE
