A few years ago Newcastle were playing the best football in the country and had a host of good young signings yet as of late the seem to have completely lost the plot..any thoughts?

Old age!
Robson shearer and Speed the core of the team 4 years ago have all aged and Newcastle will need 2 replace them or consider suitable replacements.

They've missed out on the Champions League for 2 successive seasons which has helped as they haven't had the funds to build on the team they have.

I think the main reason is that, until Woodgate arrived, they had a defence barely worthy of the Premiership, let alone a championship contending side. They're always going to score goals, but Bramble, O'Brien, Hughes and Bernard are hardly the best players around...

thats crap man!! no offence... Shearer & Speed have been our best players for the past 5 years, and including Given into that list too... Shearer was 2nd top scorer in the prem last year, still doing it like he has done for the past 15 years at the top level... the difference with Shearer is when the chips are down hes proud to wear the shirt and will give that little bit extra for the cause, its no coincidence this old pro's have been our best players, they are true professionals and look after themselves, its the young players that have let the team down... Dyer being a particular person to blame the self confessed 'king of bling' his head is too fucken pot, he thinks hes been ther done it wen he aint done shit, he used to be one of the brightest young prospects in the country, but for example at the end of the season when he was injured and he should have been tryna recover in time for the Euro's i seen him and JJ out on the toon more happy too score with the bitches than on the pitch... his attitude is just completely wrong, i hope he gets moved to right back and gets the culture shock the **** deserves... ive got big hopes for Shoala, i think hes very underrated, he can beat a man like hes not their and his all round game is improving no ends... shud hopefully get his chance with England soon if he gets a decent run in.. the key for me is if Bellamy and Woodgate stay fit because they were missing for about 5 months of last season each, and Woodgate was getting MOM nearly every game he played, and Bellers is the perfect foil for Shearer, weve got one of the best defenders in the country coming thru n all in Steven Taylor... watch this space ;) so hopefully him and Woodgate can provide a solid foundation, and i think Robert has had his chance, he didnt look arsed at all at the end of the season.. when the mood takes him ther is no one better, he just cant b arrsed half the time and decides to think hes Pele and try n shoot from impossible angles... he should remember Pele wasnt left footed

Totally agree with Jonny

I am a big fan of Gary Speed, I don't why some fans dislike him. When he is missing we don't look as organised, plus we don't have any other midfielders bar Bowyer who are prepared to put their foot in, Dyer, JJ, Robert and Viana bottle most challenges, I hope we sign Nicky butt as he would be a great replacement for Speed when he leaves. As for Shearer, like Jonny has said, he isn't past it, 28 goals last season would prove that.

Laurent Robert is the single most frustrating player i've seen at Newcastle, when he can be arsed he is one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premiership, he was also our 2nd top scorer last season aswell as being our top assister. The less said about when he can't be arsed the better.

Fitness was our major problem last season, Woodgate and Bellamy being injured/suspended at key times. Like Jonny I think Bellamy is a great player, works class with Shearer and never stops working, his finishing has improved massively aswell (An example of this was against Mallorca when he was through on goal and took his time before finishing confidently)

It has been reported that Dyer may be switched to right-back in an effort to re-ignite his career, I would be in favour of this as Dyer has played at right-back before, plus I think he would be a better outlet than Hughes. Dyer needs to mature alot aswell, cut down on the clubbing definitely.

Also agree that Shola will continue to improve, when he got his chance last season he showed great promise, he's got great feet and is a good finisher. The only real drawback is that he is more similar to Shearer than Bellamy is.

As for our defence, when Woodgate is fit he holds it together, O'Brien is a far better player alongside Woodgate, it's just when Bramble partners him he isn't as confident and silly mistakes set in. Woodgate is probably Bobby's best signing, absolute class, he is so confident on the ball and can pick out players with ease, his only problem is fitness. I am also a great fan of Bernard, he gives his all every match and is a great tackler, he can also get forward to good effect. I haven't seen a lot of Taylor but when I have seen him he looks an accomplished and mature defender.

Overall, I feel that if we can stay relatively injury-free we can definitely challenge for that last Champions League spot.
