Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition [PC]
Officially announced yesterday, a remake of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2 and the various expansions with some additional content.
As long as they stay true to the games and don't go fudging with features in a silly manner this is a definite buy. Due out this summer. http://baldursgate.com/ |

Only PC?
I enjoyed Baldur's on the PS2. Really don't want to go down the road of having to buy a new PC every time I want to play a new title. Consoles are too convenient...

How low? I dare say my PC is now laughably shit by gaming standards.

To put the GeForce 2 part into context, those graphics cards were released about 12 years ago. |

A gaming PC will last as long as any Console! Sure in 3 or 4 years you might not be able to Max out all the graphics, but it doesn't mean you can't play it. And it'll still take a dump on anything graphically the consoles have to offer.

I doubt many people realise just how much the graphics of non-exclusive PC games have stalled due to console limitations - again. That plus the fact games have loading zones all over the flipping place just because of the bloody consoles. |

It's just the ease I suppose for most people. I mean I'm a PC gamer too, but I also love the trio of my PS3, leather chair and big telly.
And consoles are more reliable.

I think Matt probably means the large number of factors (each piece of hardware could be by a different company) involved when running a new game for the first time which can cause really odd errors that you can't easily track down.
For me, I just can't get comfortable on a console to game for long periods. My PC is also hooked up to both a 27" monitor and 42" TV so I can switch simply by adjusting the graphics card output from monitor to TV - or can have both running together if necessary. |

I ought to sort my PC out to make it a bit more gamerish. At present I've got a fat old monitor and one of those £8.99 chinese chairs from Argos.

I used to be PC gamer, but got fed up of having to keep upgrading hardware & software just to able to play new games. After a day at work, putting up with various levels of aggro, I kind of like the simplicity of the consoles. Matter of personal preference I guess. Regardless, would like to see a BG-esque title for consoles that isn't a throwaway title, has some offline multiplayer and actually allows the second player to level up properly.

I am currently playing through Baldur's Gate (PC). It took a bit of time to adjust to the old school resolution of 640 x 480 but once acclimatised it's still a quality game. I know there are programs such as EasyTutu and BG Trilogy that improve the engine and the resolution, but after trying them I reverted back to the original install as a matter of preference. Both altered the experience a little too much for me, and not always in a good way.
I have my GPU scale the image to 640 x 480 otherwise the display scales (stretches) it to fit my 1920 x 1080 screen. The latter distorts the image a little too much. The former suits just fine with black bars either side. If this Enhanced Edition comes out soon, I would be interested. I'm not too far into this playthrough, so if this arrives in a timely fashion and doesn't distort the original experience too much outside of modern resolution support and an updated engine, then we'd be onto something. |
