how to defend in pes 2012?

I recently started playing pes 2012 on ps3 and the defending is completely different from the ps2 version.Players attempt to muscle opposition off the ball instead of simply tackling. I have been playing as England and I recently won the European Cup on regular difficulty but the defending had me in jitters.I use the usual X or R1 + X to defend and the ease with which the opposition often skipped past me was alarming.
I would appreciate any tips on defending I can get because I consider myself to be a good player attacking wise but the defending is letting me down.
