What to use as an external storage device?

@Sweey, you know you would be summoned to this.

Yesternight's story:
Spoiler:

This said, I got a SSD a few months ago and these things are awesome. The lack of noise and moving parts really is a big difference. I know there are external SSDs but they cost too much. So I made a list of what I think can be used as external storage:

- SD card
- USB flash drive
- External SSD
- External HDD

My question is: I know the first three use flash memory (meaning shelf life is a concern), but I never had any issues so far with flash drives suddenly going empty, and people keep MicroSDs on their phones for years, rewriting almost every second, so it shouldn't be a problem. They may be more expensive but at least I know they won't snap the way my old HDD did.

The HDDs have far more storage room, cost a fraction of the above mentioned options, and theoretically have much longer shelf lives. Size is not a problem, so the only drawback I can think of is the moving parts.

In my old HDD (320GB) I had around 220GB used. I could have been using less, but if I had the space there was no need to delete stuff. Looking for options that allow me to store those 220GB, this is the cheapest I can find:

- SD card: €130 for 256GB (pretty much ruled out, unless I get several 32GB cards at €8 each)
- USB drive: €90 for 256GB (€17 for 64GB, same option as SD cards)
- External SSD: can't even find them here. However I could get an internal SSD + Sata/Usb dock, which would cost €75 + ~€10 respectively
- External HDD: €60 for 1TB (€15 for 256GB. The difference is mind-blowing)

What are your suggestions?

BRILLIANT DEATH OF A HARD DRIVE SOUND!

I only have two SSDs (OS drive and one of my two game drives). The others are HDDs and I have an external USB HDD which I'm happy with - a Western Digital MyPassport Ultra.

Using an SSD simply for holding files is a waste of money. It is best used for the OS and applications that use the drive a lot for big files. The benefit for games is less obvious and it varies from game to game - some are slower on SSDs due to the volume/mix of files they use.

I'd say go with an external HDD.

The speed benefit is quite obvious in the main drive, but as I only use the external HDD for file storage (everything that requires instalation or running programs is on the SSD I already have, I don't need much) the only advantage SSDs would have is the physical resistance.

I'd have another internal drive if the laptop would allow me.

I'll have a look at my options in the HDD range. As usual, thank you for your help.
