Major League Soccer

We might not have enough fans for a single club but maybe enough to talk about the whole league. Anyway the season is starting soon, let the trash talk begin.

MLS 2007: Structure of the 13 Team Schedule

The addition of Toronto FC in the Eastern Conference has forced a change in the MLS schedule in 2007. Each of the 13 clubs will play every other team twice (home and away) for a total of 24 games.

The remaining six games will be played against teams from the same conference (three home and three away).

In the seven-team Eastern Conference each team will play the other six teams one additional time.

In the six-team Western Conference, each team will play the other five teams an additional time, leaving one extra intra-conference game to be played. This fixture will be determined by rivalries, meaning the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA will play each other four times, as will Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo.

Some absolute screamers there. Personally I don't generally have access to MLS games and have only seen a handful here and there, but I have read a number of articles from world football sources explaining the on field and off field attributes.

From what I can see it a a very technical game, based around keeping possession and progressivly creating attacks with good team play.

This is a very admirable way to go about developing the game and a similar system is employed in the emerging leagues in Asia and the Middle East.

Most people I talk to have no knowledge of these leagues and make silly assumptions about the quality of the game formulated by their ignorance and refusal to see beyond the Prem.

I genually hope that the MSL takes off this time and there are many more well known players arriving to increase the profile of the league not only in Europe but more importantly in the US.

Maybe one of you guys can explain to me why teenagers stop playing "soccer" when they reach 15 /16. I heard that one of the problems is that unlike everywhere else in the world soccer is seen as a more middle class game and so the potential proffesionals are incouraged by demanding parents to get good grades at school, go to college and pursue a "proper" career, rather than take the gamble of becoming a "soccer" star and earn close to the minimum wage.

Well in america people think soccer is a womens sport beacuse of the low level of contact and say its straight up boring. Funny because baseball is worse in terms of boring. But I think it will slowly change because of the amount of south americans entering the country, My parents are the same about grades and what my carrer choice is because they are the keys to succsess. Soccer in america is considered a third world sport.

One of the reasons I see is that it's still not really taken seriously by many teens. you can't play Baseball/Football/etc. for your school until your about 13/14 years old, so most parents will sign their children up to play soccer for something to do until they're able to play a more popular sport. Many teens regard it as a child's sport because of this.

Another problem is the level of youth coaching. As I said earlier, there is no school team to play for when you're 8 so if you play in an independent league then your coach is most likely going to be a team mate's parent who's volunteering to coach and doesn't really know anything about the sport. Most standard youth games are simply kick the ball and chase, no real tactical or technical training. So many kids never really experience the game how it's supposed to be played. They stop playing assuming that it's a bunch of peope with no talent chasing after the ball for 90 minutes. The assumption that soccer doesn't really take talent to play is still very prevalent. You can go to a higher level of play and get some real qualified coaches, but that costs several hundred dollars.

And then the fact that not many children grow up wanting to be a "soccer star." Soccer players aren't idolised the same way American football players are. This is mostly due to most people of parenting age in America right now don't see soccer as a serious sport and so there children don't grow up watching it, as more people who are interested in the game become parents it's likely that their children will become interested.
