Expect a bit more from Italy this year. Same with Spain.

This is the best eleven. Finally Scolari took out both Costinha and Maniche who clearly are not in their best form.

He is kinda like Gattuso, running like a lunatic around the ball. He is a good player, although sometimes he is a bit rough. He knows how to shoot and he is a good free-kick taker. But you will see him better today.

He should've stayed with Boavista.

Christiano Ronaldo is about to flip out. He should start playing less violent video games!

He has an anger management problem. He should have been sent off in the last two friendly matches . Scolari really needs to do something about it.

bagrunnell is an unknown

Just wanted to make a point about the match today. I was a bit surprised about Scolari's chioce to play Miguel at right back today. He is a great player, but given the fact that Portugal hardly have the best starts in these competitions, I would have presumed Scolari would have aired on the side of caution and played the more defensively minded Ferreira. Also given that Ferriera and Miguel are in my opinion the two best full backs, why not play Ferreira at left back? Better than Nuno Valente, and has proven he can play the position at Porto and Chelsea, this would accomodate for both of them.

I think it payed to play Miguel though, as his forward runs are great, and at times he developed some fantastic link-up play with Christiano Ronaldo. Will be interesting to see Scolari's choice if Portugal come up against some bigger and more attacking teams.

Round-up of Portugal players performances against Angola:

Ricardo - Was surprisingly secure when he cathed the crosses and high balls. Did his job very well, didn't give unnecessary rebounds from long shots. Good short opening passes at times when there was space. Seems like he has developed and matured since the European Championships.

Fernando Meira - Looks like a solid and stylish center back. Did his job as well as he needed to, no big time rush in the Portugal back line really. No mistakes, and opening play was very calm. I think he is a good partner to Ricardo Carvalho.

Miguel - Miguel was maybe a surprise starter, but you have to remember he had a very good tournament two years ago. Was very confident in defensive play, didn't let anyone past him really. Offensive wise he made good runs, and showed some of his tempo with a few good dribbling runs. Connected well with Ronaldo, which might prove more vital in tougher games.

Nuno Valente - To me Valente has always been quite an average player who just does his job and hangs around for the rest of the game. It was a safe performance last night, but Miguel definitely overshadowed him when it comes to playing as a side back. Can be easily replaced by Paolo Ferreira, who is a much more consistent and overall skilled player. Ferreira also connects well with Carvalho. Took an stupid yellow when there was no real danger.

Ricardo Carvalho - Very good calm perfomance from the Chelsea defender, but then again he should play well against Angola. Organised the defence very well, safely cleared the ball when he had to and passed the ball confidently to the sides and midfield. Overall Portugal's defence looked very solid yesterday, which is good considering the tough games are still to come. Carvalho has developed into one of the most consistent center backs under Mourinho.

Petit - Did his job well enough at the bottom of Portugal's midfield, but didn't actually shine. His passing play was good, and he made the necessary fouls and tackles at times. I'd still prefer Costinha over him, as he knows very well when to play rough and when to calm down the tempo of the game.

Tiago - Had an average game, mainly passing the ball safely in the first half. His posession play was very nice though, he rarely lost the ball when he got it. Won a lot of the balls easily, but it won't be as easy as yesterday in the next games. In the second half he played more forward, but that didn't actually lead into anything. Some of his shots were non-threatening, and he will have to improve his connection with Simao and Ronaldo. Still, he has the potential and the skills to keep his place over Maniche who lacks club team games from this season.

Simao - Was quite invisible throughout the game. Needs to take more responsibility with the ball when near the opposition box. Now he was playing it safe too much. He will without a doubt lose his spot when Deco comes back.

Figo - Good set up for the winning goal from Figo. Showed some of his old flair in the first minutes and his passing play was well timed on many occasions. Towards the end he seemed to come un-usually deep when Tiago went forwards. Overall it was a nice performance by the Portugal veteran.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Didn't play badly, but could have used his pace to get past more opponents. Played a very organised game, not losing too many balls when attacking. Lacked his usual threat down the flank, but had a good header that could've gone in with some luck in the first half. Joao Ricardo did well to deny his shot later in the opening half, but Ronaldo could have done better with the shot. Seemed frustrated after he got substituted, but it seemed that Scolari wanted to save him for latter games.

Pauleta -
Scored the goal when he got the chance. Otherwise he played his usual game, just looking for good opportunities, not participating a lot in the build up play.

I was surprised that Scolari subbed Ronaldo instead of the shite Simao. Fine, you want to add another controlling midfielder, but at least Ronaldo got past his opponents, with hits and misses. In the end, a winning coach is always right, as they say here.

Good work on the ratings again, was surprised with Miguel and Figo, they played well.
