@Sweey somewhere between £700-£800, though I won't have it all until end of febraury, so might buy everything BUT the GPU at the end of this month as the system will still be useable thanks to the onboard graphics.

I've been using this thread as a starting point then going off and researching various parts etc, hence where the xfx came from.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=745567

I wasn't too sure what wattage i'd need for the GPU/CPU combo as wasn't intending on overclocking (hence why no third party cooling) at least not for the forseable future and assumed 500w would suffice. Looking at the prices for a 650w it's not much of an increase.

Edit - or would you recommend holding fire on purchases until I have all the cash in case of price drops?

I prefer to buy as and when prices are good. What might cost £500 today might be £560 in a week, £539 in two weeks, £497 in three weeks, £495 in four weeks and £550 at the end of February. If I get a chance I'll put together a separate build for the budget and see how it compares. You seem to be forgetting a monitor at present by the way...

Edit - just checked reviews and my tv apparently has 14ms input lag so that's not too bad right

14ms, if that is indeed true, will be fine.

Look at this thread just to get an idea of alternate hardware to what you've already considered:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=18571554

EDIT: People happy enough with a 550W PSU in that thread so perhaps not such a bad idea staying there although I do still prefer to have 'extra' wattage.

What TV do you have? 14ms is excellent.

My damn Samsung has 40ms, aha.

Done a bit of looking around and currently think this will be the set up:

Motherboard Gigabyte Z87-D3H £94
CPU Intel i5 4670K £155
GPU 3GB Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC WINDFORCE +BF4 £230
RAM Corsair Vengeance Jet Black 2x4GB £66
HDD 1TB WD10EZEX £45
OS Windows 8.1 64Bit tbc
PSU Cooler Master G Series 650w £68
Optical Drive SATA 24x DVD Writer £15.00
CaseCorsair Carbide Series 200R £50.00

The reason I have tbc next to the OS is because quite a few PC builders over at neoGAF have pointed me in the direction of a few members of reddit who are always selling license keys for Windows 8.1 from as little as £25 with hundreds of satisfied customers. The consensus is these guys are legit and the license keys work, so obviously i'd be interested in obtaining one then putting the iso on to a disc/USB myself and installing it like that. Any advice against it?

Feckin hell, 280x are more or less out of stock everywhere (except the ridiculously higher priced ones. Im looking for between £230-£260.

Tempted to go for a gigabyte 2GB OC GTX 770 instead, but all this talk of mantle in the future makes me want to stick with AMD

Don't read too much into mantle. Its probably just a gimmick that will never take off. Marketing hype and all that.

Yeah Been doing some quick reading. I've got just over two weeks until I want to build so I'll see if the gigabyte 280x comes in Stock. If not I'll go with their overclocked 770. Comes with a copy of assassins creed 4.

I'm (not so patiently) waiting for the release of 22nm cards late this year/early next year. Unfortunately it'd be best for me to wait for the second wave of 22nm cards. Technologically I can but....well we'll see :>

My 280x turned up today took a gamble ordering it from Pixmania even though I've heard horror stories and our own Dundons wasn't happy with them (i ordered it before I found out this fact) but it was the only place I could find with it instock (since has gone OOS again) and it was cheaper than anywhere else would be with it instock.

£230, customer service and delivery times were great, packaging was very good, just hope it works, but tbh if it doesnt that will be Gigabyte i'll be dealing with as I heard their UK RMA is rather excellent.

I was tempted to purchase a 290 on the weekend. Managed to survive the onslaught though.

According to this

They don't recomend getting a new card unless it is three levels higher than your old one. When do you expect the new cards to start trickling out? I assume thats when you'll bite.

20/22nm cards are late 2014/early 2015 according to rumours. That will be the third wave of AMD cards since my current card (currently using a HD 6970 lightning; 7XXX series and R7/R9 series have come out since). My only slight concern is that the first set of 20/22nm cards released will be a test with issues ironed out for the second wave of cards in late 2015/early-to-mid 2016.
