Antivirus...

...what are you all using these days?

It's been AVG for me for years, but it just somehow doesn't feel right in this modern, cyberterror filled world. What's the best freebie on the webs at the moment?

@Sweey because you're the best tech-head I can think of, but all answers welcome.

I find Avast to be the best free option.

I just use Windows Defender (Windows 8.1) and run the free version of MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware once a week.

EDIT: If anyone posts that they're using McAfee or Norton I'll consider banning them for life. Kaspersky is also a bit of a mess these days.

When browsers were enabled to detect malware ahead it changed everything. Made it all safer. Although I am surprised you are relying on Windows Defender basically alone (@sweey)

I have full cookie and javascript control in both Firefox (set to accept cookies but to ask me every time and the NoScrpt extension installed) and Chrome (set to block all cookies and javascript automatically - I manually override these settings where necessary) along with AdBlock.

I've not had an issue since I started using Microsoft Security Essentials (now Windows Defender in Windows 8) back in late 2008/early 2009.

Ditto.

And besides those, some good browsing habits and common sense too.

Hypothetically speaking, if one was to get one of these particular pieces of software free, as a result of signing up for a particular internet service provider, is this ok? This is all hypothetical of course, not speaking from any personal experience or anything like that, no siree Bob.

Said individual should, hypothetically, understand that McAfee and Norton hog system resources while failing to detect viruses that embed themselves on a computer, making no antivirus software a genuinely better option.
