wr50l has stepped out of the darkness into slightly less darkness

New Zealand are in quite a bit of trouble for their game against South Africa this Saturday.

Gibbes, Robinson, McCaw and Dan Carter are all out, although they're is a chance that Dan Carter will recover from a virus in time. If he doesn't then he will be replaced at inside centre by Tuitopo(?).

Match Report:
From the outset everyone knew this game was not going to be like past encounters. South Africa took the lead in the 23rd second through Jean de Villiers when he capitalized on an All Black mistake. The Springboks come out with a similar defensive style to that employed successfully by the Wallabies in the 2003 Rugby World Cup Semi-final against the All Blacks. It involved their midfield defence rushing out of the line at the All Blacks 2nd receiver, trapping the 1st receiver and making him unable to spread it wide, unless he wanted to risk and intercept. It was extremely effective, it forced the All Blacks to play predominately a forward game that saw the speed men not able to get the ball in open spaces.

It also put extra pressure on All Black Fly Half Carlos Spencer, who does not function well in tight spaces, added together with the All Blacks preferred flat style of attack, saw Spencer have a nightmare of a game. He was put under pressure every time he touched the ball.

The Springboks managed to find holes in a normally water tight all black defence, that saw them go in three times before half-time. Most of them came from All Blacks errors, whether it was in attack or defence. This however did prove to be their last scoring play.

Although it looked liked a new Springbok team, with new game plans, they still had their most renown trait, disruptive and undisciplined defence. Every time New Zealand go a sniff of the try line, it resulted in Dan Carter slotting a penalty.

It finished with a climax that was warranted by such a close game, the game was decided just seconds before the hooter. After 15 phases on the South African line the All Blacks finally managed to crack it with South Africa not willing to give away a penalty this time, because the All Blacks were only 3 points behind them and a penalty would have meant that they would have walked away sharing the heavily sought after points. Carlos Spencer spotted space out wide after he beat Brent Russel with the pass it was all Doug Howlett who strolled over to put New Zealand 2 points in front with only seconds remaining. As Doug Howlett was getting to celebrate the try the hooter went off, to signal the end of the game. Spencer missed the conversion but it didn’t matter New Zealand with the perfect start to the Tri-Nations having now won 2 from 2.

Tri-Nations Table:
.........................P.... W....D....L....BP....Points... .+/-
New Zealand:.......2....2.....0... .0.....0........8.......11
South Africa:........1....0.....0... .1.....1........1.......-2
Australia:.............1....0. ....0....1.....0........0..... ..-9

P = Games Played
W = Games Won
D = Games Drawn
L = Games Lost
BP = How Many Bonus Points Earned
Points = How Many Points Earned
+/- = Points Scored Minus Points Conceeded

wr50l has stepped out of the darkness into slightly less darkness

In an attempt to revive this thread.

British teams in action this weekend and next weekend.

This Saturday Scotland take on Australia at Murrayfield and the Welsh Dragons host Tri-Nations Champions South Africa.

Next week, England, under their new manager, take on Canada.

Predictions -

Scotland 13-29 Australia

Scotland'll give them a game, but the Wallabies will be far too strong for their Northern Hemisphere opponents.

Wales 14-23 Australia

As with Scotland Wales will play well and challenge the Tri-Nations winners, but will be outclassed eventually.

England 40-7 Canada

No real contest, even for an England team without new captain Jonny Wilkinson (shoulder injury).

Anyone else care to predict?

I for one cannot wait for the world cup. I reckon the Kiwis will choke again and it will go to the Springboks or the Wallabies if I had to back a nothern hemisphere team I'ld have to go with the french, if they can find the consistency that is.

It does seem as if the All Blacks have maybe peaked too soon, but I wouldnt put money on it tbh.

Their main challenge, imo, will be from South Africa, White has his timing running perfect and has put so much emphasis on the defensive line during the tri-nations that they will be better for it come September.

The group of death has to be Ireland, France and Argentina - win and you play Scotland in the next round, but come second and you face N.Z. in Cardiff.......

Holy crap that is a toughie the Argies have what it takes to go a long way too, a good solid pack and very innovative backline, the defence is lacking though and that seems to be the focus point for this world cup, but you can never really tell.

The All Blacks' mighty team are un-matched these days.

I was hoping the Sprinboks and Derick Hougaard would come out as winners of the Tri-Nations but alas, that's something I can only dream about for now. It's been a long time too since they've won it.

Derrick Hougaard cant play under pressure so when the pack is getting nailed he folds. His place kicking was well below par too. He all but played himself out of the WC squad at the Tri-nations. The Springboks need a consistent fly half, Butch James and Andre Pretorius are not consistent enough like Dan Carter is for the All Blacks.
I think that will be our demise in France.
