About our last game (Sunday vs Marítimo). Not pretty, but got the three points and that's what matter for now. I'm liking Peseiro's approach to the press, stating that "We'll play better and provide better entertainment in the future, but for now we must get results over spectacle".

Same lineup as Lope, but there's a different approach to the attacking part of the game. I don't know, it felt more vertical and rushed, which is a great thing. Defensively problems still persist, and I don't expect them to change soon.

About the new signings...

I really like Marega (left). Powerful, fast, incisive, although not perfect for possession styles. But we need somebody to add speed and power in our front line. Similar to Hulk.

José Sá... I want to like him but he won't let me. Great, huge display in the U20 World Cup a few years ago, didn't maintain is form afterwards. Salin relegated him to the bench, and while that won't change in Porto, he'll have the chance to learn from Helton and Casillas. What's better than that?

vs Estoril, 30/01/2016

- Estoril scores the first
- Aboubakar levels it
- Danilo heads it in, Layun grabs his 2nd assist
- Ridiculous miss from Aboubakar
- André André dissipates any doubts

Finally a good display. The best in months, and in a difficult ground (may as well be considered the portuguese Brittania). Vertical football, plenty of players in the 18-yard box, incisive counter attacks while remaining calm. First half was everything I wanted.

In the second 45 minutes there were two different stories. One in the first 20 when Estoril had the ball but never caused much trouble with it. We'd pressure steadily on the half-way line, and they'd pass it around unable to breach our defence. The final part was of complete control from us, more chances ensued, another goal went in, and 3 more points. Looking forward to the next match, theis could by a real turning point in the team.

As for the tactical approach. 4-4-2 with plenty of freedom for changes, but it truly was a 4-4-2 (noticeable between the 45-70 min marks). Defensively... oh boy. I have never centre backs as bad as these in Porto. We need better players, there isn't a way around it. Tactics won't solve this one.

vs Gil Vicente, 03/02/2016

- BRLLIANT GOAL BY RÚBEN NEVES
- Suk scores his first goal for Porto
- Bruno da Silva sees a red card for this...
- ... and Sérgio Oliveira scores in the free kick. Perfect placement

Nice game, took us 20/25 mins to start carburetting (4-2-3-1, 2 and 3 were too far apart), but after Peseiro corrected the 2 positioning (Danilo and Neves) we pressured higher on the pitch, defensive and attacking cohesion was better, and Gil Vicente lost all hope.

Danilo is proving himself a fulcral part of the team, even better than Fernando a few years back (and I really liked Fernando). Neves is back on the good displays, Marega is not what we are used to (clearly lacks tactical awareness and runs with his head down), but we might get something from him. Suk should be given the place, Aboubakar has been mediocre for far too long now. Layún already has 16 assists (beware Özil!).

A final word about Helton, who still is a top class keeper and has attacking awareness like few others. Not a Neuer, but Casillas is a kid compared with the brazilian.

Thoughts on Martinez being sold to a Chinese club 6 months after At.Madrid bought him?

Football is lost, that amount of money shouldn't be allowed, too bad not only it is but it has become usual as well.

Jackson "gave up" and went for the money. I still respect him for what he did for us, but he fell a long way on my consideration.

And I'm surely being laughed at around here for getting it completely wrong on his time at Madrid. Wouldn't change my ideas though, he is still incredibly good. And it was an incredible deal Atletico got, almost as good as ours for Imbula.

He was not succeeding at Atletico and the former strictly did not want him, this was the only way to make a profit for themselves when previously they had resigned themselves to 10m quid loss so they forced him out of the club, what was he to do?

Just like players force their way out, under the right circumstances players can be treated as pieces of meat by the clubs too...and Thank Fucking God we did not sign him.

By us, or themselves? Probably both.

If I feel like it I'll post here something their president said. A master of humor that man.

Sporting show me occasional signs of breaking down but, worryingly, come through those phases and get results.

I'd expect Benfica to stand more chance than yourselves given the table at the moment.

Don't agree on the first, but the second part is clearly true, you do need better than Giroud and (current) Martinez.

I don't know if you've been following the matches but the level of luck and favorable refereeing decisions they have, only in the last 5 mins of matches, is truly remarkable. It will have to run out sometime.

They are playing like mad men currently, we are also improving but given current form only and not considering potential, Benfica as champions would be my bet.

Well I'm not surprised you would disagree for what he did at Porto but I stand by it. I would expect Giroud to score a lot of goals in the Portuguese league too. He got his move to one of the big European leagues and he failed to deliver. Plus, there's a reason why Teó Gutiérrez has been preferred to Martinez for the Colombian national team.
