Beach Football

Anybody here follows this glorious sport? World Cup is being held at Portugal as we speak, and I'm glad I managed to get some time and watch Spain vs Iran. 5x6 at final time, even with a worse-than-expected refereeing it was an incredible game.

Not really watched it since the days of Joel Cantona

Used to watch it when I was younger and was broadcasted on Eurosport. I remember Portugal being quite good at the time, they had a guy who I think was regarded as the best in the world.

I actually now find it frustrating to watch and relate it to kids playing football, fun being a part of it but pretty shit as a spectacle.

I've never really been interested in it, but did get to see a one day beach football tournament in old town Richmond (London). Me, my brother and cousin were heading to the park for a kick about and got stopped by someone working on the event. They were clearly struggling to fill the stadium, so gave us free tickets.

We got to see the likes of Cantona, Grobellar and Arsenal legend Paul Davis display their skills. It was shown on Eurosport, so there was a camera crew about and Hazel Irvine was doing interviews. There was also an Xbox tent - I played Virtua Tennis. There were other events going on, but can't remember them.

Ah, Beach Soccer. The only sport where Portugal is considered one of the favourites to win the World Cup and SC Braga is cabaple of attracting world class players (like Amarelle) and winning not just one, but three league titles in a row. What's not to like about it?

I see it as the spiritual successor of Futsal, which was viewed as more of an hobby a decade or so ago, but is now starting to be seen as a more serious sport. Beach Soccer will probably follow in its footsteps.
