Jimi Hendrix Named The Greatest Electric Guitarist Ever
Quote:
Jimi Hendrix has been voted the greatest electric guitar player of all time by the readers of Time Magazine.

Music critic Josh Tyrangiel compiled a list of his top ten, which included legends such as Jimmy Page, BB King, Chuck Berry and Eric Clapton.

However, Hendrix was given the top spot on the strength of his unique fusion of genres such as blues, rock and psychedelia.

"No-one wielded a guitar with as much charisma," Mr Tyrangiel commented.

Hendrix, who died in 1970, was followed in the list by former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, who was described as a "remarkably precise player".

Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones was also included in the top ten, partly because he has written more memorable electric guitar riffs "than anyone else in rock 'n' roll".

Mr Tyrangiel highlighted the hook to (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction as a good example of this, along with the riffs to Start Me Up, Gimme Shelter and Jumpin' Jack Flash.
Biggest :faceplm: ever for the following bit, and anyone who guesses why can have some positive rep.

Quote:
The full top ten was as follows:

01. Jimi Hendrix
02. Slash
03. B.B. King
04. Keith Richards
05. Eric Clapton
06. Jimmy Page
07. Chuck Berry
08. Les Paul
09. Yngwie Malmsteen
10. Prince

Some people would even disagree with Hendrix as number one. I know a guy (who's a guitarist) that took some sort of guitar course, where, as well as playing, he learnt to make and repair guitars. According to him, most of the elite guitarists actually think that Hendrix is undoubtedly the most iconic guitarist of all time, but not necessarily the best.

Oh i'd definately agree with that. But I suppose you have to take into account how they mean 'best'. Is it like Technique/Talent, or more along the lines of Influence/Oringinality.

Is there an acoustic guitar list somewhere? There was an all-time all-guitar list once, perhaps by the Rolling Stoned, where you had John McLaughlin in the 30-40 spot somewhere, yet Django and Wes were not in the bloody list! The latter could be top 20 if not 10.

I don't see how Prince is on that list, as a guitar player.

Prince was a great soloist on the ol' electric. Probably noted on that list due to his writing ability, but he was a great player no doubt.

I'm just astounded how Slash is number 2 on that list. It looks ridiculous when people like Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page below him.

And how Santana isn't on there is beyond me :/

I know, pretty stupid list really.

I find it hard to make a top 20, let alone a top 10

This article was intresting.

Jack White seems to have established a career making disappointingly average records that he gets away with because he's a 'genius' and everyone is prepared to acquiesce to the disappointingly average records in the sure and safe knowledge that there must be another Elephant just around the corner, even though The White Stripes made that album six years ago and it's been a case of diminishing returns ever since. Maybe it's time to accept that Jack White is not a genius, just a bit of an oddball who is quite good at the guitar and yelping but who is unlikely to make another really great record now he seems determined to spread his talent thinly across as many bands as possible and we should all just move on and find someone else's music to hysterically hype out of all proportion.
Quote:
If Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the blues, Eric Clapton must've been forced to use his house as collateral since there's no trace of a soul in his clinical, soporific and vastly over-praised guitar expertise. Other than a few nice tunes in the 60s, with the band Cream, and Derek & the Dominos' evergreen Layla, there's been a very long career of unmemorable, technically proficient, noodling tedium. Even giving him plaudits for introducing Bob Marley to a wider audience (with his cover of I Shot the Sheriff) doesn't make up for 45 years of music that primarily appeals to accountants who dream of owning a motorbike when they retire.
