@JohnSound - do you know much about this Ryan Gauld chap who's just gone to Sporting Lisbon?

Not massively, because i haven't watched much top flight Scottish football at all in the last few years.

From what I have seen and heard though this kid's got serious potential and is getting a lot of people seriously excited. He gets called "Mini Messi" for a reason, he has a very similar physique and movement to the Messi we remember coming through at Barca. Describing Gauld sounds just like describing Messi as a teen. He's a little left footer with exceptional dribbling skills and an incredible eye for a pass, but he needs to bulk up. Getting out of Scotland is a great idea as he'll get a chance to work on his technique and hopefully avoid the serious injuries that would have been inevitable if he'd stayed in the SPL.

Now the cautious opinion. Dundee United have been producing exciting youngsters for years now, but how many are excelling? Gauld is the best of them and was reportedly being watched by Man Utd, Liverpool, Everton & Arsenal but others like Andy Robertson and Gary Mackay-Steven have only been linked with the likes of West Brom, Swansea and Leeds. Jump back a bit further and you'll find unsuccessful transfers like Scott Allan (West Brom) and David Goodwillie (Blackburn)

Also, I don't think Gauld started much more than half of Dundee United's games last year. OK he's only 18 and they may have been protecting him from injury, but you would have thought such a great player would have started the Cup Final! He's a YouTube compilation makers wet dream, but he's got a long way to go before he is an actual superstar.

I'm delighted he's gone abroad though, more British players should. If he had gone to the English Premier League, or to Celtic, I don't think he would develop as well as he hopefully will at Sporting. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
