Fair enough about Wrong Side of Town, it was absolute bollocks but I have watched 50 new films, a mix of Netflix, Prime Video and a backlog of movies I hadn't got round to watching.

I'm still impressed by Phats getting to 50 so quickly. I should be there by the end of the month (maybe), still enjoying a few repeat viewings in between.

I've got better things to do than watching 50 new films in such a short space of time. I need to find time for gaming, anme and masturbating.

Have you masturbated 50 times in such a short space of time?

I thought the 50s were till the end of the year. I will get there, eventually. Maybe not books, and certainly not games or TV shows.

They are. It's just that some (well... most) of us are sad and have no life.

It was good. I'm not a major F1 fan (I don't watch it, only really have a passing interest), but I enjoyed Senna throughout.

First trimester review, totals in parenthesis (I'll be doing monthly reviews from now on)

Books: 4 (4)
Films: 25 (25)
TV Shows: 4 (4)
Albums: 8 (8)
Games: 2 (2)

Most relevant films

The Hunt (9.0/10)

The last time I was this mad at a film was with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. My reasons are almost the same even if the films are not, but after a while they all merge together. How a man is, slowly but steadily, destroyed and taken away from everything he knows, until the very last bit of respect and self identity are nothing but a mirage. I was hooked by this story, on how they could all be so blind and gullible, and turn their back on the man they had known for so long. Fucking hell it pisses me off! Yet I demanded to know how it was going to turn out. I got way more emotionally invested in this than I initially expected.

The acting is excellent. Mads Mikkelsen is one of the finest actors of his generation. He conveys calmness, yet wrath and fear. His eyes are really expressive. You can feel what he wants you to feel just like he's right in front of you. And the fact most parts are in danish is a non-issue. Definitely a must watch.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (8.5/10)

It just keeps on giving. The stories merge together like they were never apart from each other. You can feel it coming, the tension building up and the plot almost past the tipping point. Superbly executed. Better than Snatch. This film is pure entertainment.

Whiplash (10/10)

There were only two films after which I immediately thought "This is a 10/10". The aforementioned Cuckoo's Nest, and Black Swan (Schindler's List is due a rewatch). I could argue Requiem for a Dream, The Dark Knight, Inglorious Basterds and Shutter Island are almost at the 10, but not quite reach it. And then comes Whiplash, a movie I had such high expectations for but still shattered them all.

Comparisons and parallelisms have been made between Whiplash and Black Swan story and plot wise so I won't dwell too much into them. Whiplash is visually better than Black Swan. The color draws you in. The golds and blacks bring you into the sounds of trumpets and drums and saxophones. It's rich, warm, bassy and beautiful. Beautifully tense and seductive as well. You know it's challenging, just like the characters know, but it still draws you in. You can't bring yourself escape the image in front of you. Black swan is harsher. More clinical. Just like the White Swan, it is perfectly executed and anything below that, even if it just hints the slightest pleasure, is unacceptable. It's grey and neutral and blue and nightmarish. You can't escape it too, but not because you feel compelled to stay in: you don't have a choice in the first place. The psychological changes happen physically, the hallucinations are real. It's not a matter of quick camera work and playing with sounds. Here it is more than that. Here it's you (Nina) who's the target of the transformation. Yes, it is conveyed by the dancing, but in Whiplash it just doesn't feel as personal. It's more about the music in itself and the pursuit for it rather than pursuit for one's own identity. Andrew knew what he wanted, Nina was afraid to find that out. And for me the cinematography was spot on in both films. They both found a way of transmitting their ideas and struggles like no other film ever did. That's why I love them both.

Donnie Darko (7.5/10)

Where to begin... It's quite over-rated, very pretentious, and the philosophical questions it raises have surely been raised before. It's a jungle of ideas that are never given to you, as you're expected to somehow find them, and it makes you feel small when you eventually don't get it (that book the old lady wrote feels like a mandatory read before watching the movie).

Nevertheless, it's thought provoking. I'm writing this, if you need any proof it is. You'll discuss it with your friends, share your admittedly wrong explanations for the film, search explanations online and look gasped at how deep people take this film and its message. It somehow got a cult following that expanded the narrative even further. A cult classic, I've read several times. Maybe, but still a fuck-all film, with pretty good performances and no discernible sense before the 3rd viewing. I don't get the hype.
