I have to agree with Barn again (saying that a lot thesedays) but having a well packaged DVD with tons of extra features leads me to believe that effort has been put into it, and is ultimately worth buying. Which leads me to the next DVD which I am contemplating. I have only ever seen parts of Black Hawk Down before and can't really remember what I thought of it, although with an offer like this, I am very tempted. I guess if other people don't have it as well, they may take up on the offer.

LINK - Black Hawk Down

Not bad for 3.99 (free delivery). Will have a think about it since I've already purchased Gladiator, Casino Royale and FIFA 09 this past week.

That Black Hawk Down set is definitely worth getting, its a great package (although there is a more bare bones release of the Extended Cut of the film, so its your choice). Next you'll have to continue the Ridley Scott deluxe theme and get the Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut 4-disc set. Not just because its very nicely done, but because it is, IMO, his best film.

Cool, thanks for the info mate. Just browsing about now for Kingdom Of Heaven, and found a very nice price on the Borders website. It's only £6.68 with free UK delivery. Here's the link for anyone interested (although by suggesting it Barn, I imagine you already have it):

LINK - Kingdom Of Heaven 4-Disc Director's Cut Edition

It looks superb to be honest, I've never seen the film but with fairly good reviews from yourself and other sites, I'm definitely contemplating it. I've bookmarked it. The only downside to ordering it would be the delivery time, the Borders site states it is "dispatched within 14 days" which even for free delivery is frankly crazy nowadays.

Its only 8 quid on Amazon, and they have it in stock. I got the R1 version of it the moment it came out (R1 box is even nicer by the way, that one looks more like a rip-off of the LOTR Extended Edition sets, but its still pretty nice). Didn't think much of the film in the cinema, but the Director's Cut blew me away, probably my favourite historical film now. Ridley Scott was forced to cut it for the cinema and it wasn't his preferred version, and you can see why - the Director's Cut is an infinitely superior film. Soundtrack is fantastic also.

I'm guessing this is the box you're referring to:

Have to say, it does look a hell of a lot nicer than the UK version. Unfortunately I don't think I'm able to play US Region films on my Xbox 360, I believe I have a Region-Free DVD player, but it's seriously on it's arse so I just use my Xbox 360 solely now.

Love this thread though, especially since I've now discovered how cheap a lot of these Special Edition DVDs really are.

That's the one.

I saw something on the Empire magazine forums which could be done as part of this thread - a DVD/Blu-ray diary. You can list your purchases for the month, and list your planned purchases for forthcoming months, whether they be new releases or existing titles you can't afford just now. It'd be interesting to see actually if any of you are faggy enough to plan or if you just make instinct purposes. I use to be that way up until a few months ago, when I started taking serious stock of my DVD collection. Now if I come across a film I'll add it to a list so that I don't forget about it, which by now is getting pretty big.

And I ordered this. I remember reading about it being in the After Dark Horrorfest, the plot sounds very interesting, and the trailer looked decent enough, so I went for it. Most of the rest of the Horrorfest films sound wank; though I might get Autopsy, which is supposed to be gorily funny and you can't go wrong with Robert Patrick playing a mad doctor:

Nah, I can't say I plan my purchases. That's the beauty of it in my opinion, the idea of browsing about and seeing what there is to offer. I never planned to buy Gladiator or Casino Royale, just the prices were too good to turn down. I'm not serious about collecting DVD's, I'll just buy them if they tickle my fancy.

However, anything and everything else is done whenever there are good offers, or when i go up town and find them dirt cheap.

Does anyone ever pop into a film retailer and end up buying a film you've never heard of, simply because the cover or title intrigued you? It's a bit of a lottery, but you can find some interesting films.

Yeah, as long as the price is right. Tell you whats great for movies on the cheap, go to your local dvd rental place. Came out with a couple exrental films for like £2 each all in great condition.

Das Experiment and Altered are my favourite purchases.

I'd be more than surprised if you got any of the emboldened titles, either because they are wad or because I know you'll change your mind and determine they are shit. And Defiance is pretty shit by the way.

I have several lists going on at the moment, in addition to my horror list, which you have seen, and which is taking priority at the moment:

1) Blu-ray (includes already released titles, forthcoming catalogue titles and new releases)

2) Action films (Arnie, Stallone, Van Damme, Norris, etc. - about 30-40 films here)

3) Films (Basically films I haven't seen or have never owned before, or newly released films I can't be arsed to get on blu-ray - guessing there's about 60-70 here, though it keeps expanding)

4) Old VHS films I need to upgrade to DVD (unfortunately there looks to about 200 titles here)

I've been on dvdcompare and found the best versions of these to save me the time in the future, but as you can see my DVD buying isn't going to stop any time soon, its going to take me probably a couple of years (presuming I'm still alive then) to get all these, and fuck knows whatever new films worth getting that will come out in that time.

EDIT: That Dying Breed film reminded me of a production I heard about a few months back, The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce, based on an incredible story from early 19th century Australia. Anyway turns out that has come out on DVD also, and I couldn't resist since it was fairly cheap and I very much want to see it:

I've also prepared a short-list of desired DVDs, which will inevitably grow. I basically looked through the Esquire 500 Greatest Film list and went through the films I would like to own/see, plus any other films (not on Esquire's list) that the list reminded me of. I've also got a few TV DVDs and box sets I'd like to get.

I won't be purchasing as frequently as BarnDoor. I think I might go for 5 items per month (box sets counted as one item).
