It had to, my list is quite big and to be honest there only take about 5 minutes. I may do another tonight just to warn you but I'm trying not to do them back-to-back (hint).

The Collector (2009)

Cast

Josh Stewart, Andrea Roth and Juan FernŠndez

Plot (No Spoilers)

Desperate to pay off his debt to his daughter and ex-wife, Arkin an ex-con plots a heist at his new employer's country home, unaware that a second criminal has also targeted the property, and rigged it with a series of deadly traps.

Thoughts

Considering this is directed by Marcus Dunston, the same guy who did Saw IV-VII it is easy to make comparisons between this and the Saw series. Fitting into the category of "torture porn", The Collectors is privy to some great death scenes including a brilliant bear trap related death and plenty of gore, but it never seems to much, everything fits nicely into the framework of the film.

As with most of the films i've mentioned in this thread, the Collector never tries to be anything that it is not. It is a (relatively) low budget and simple film with everything being spelled out after 10 minutes or so and from there on you can just be entertained by the on screen carnage. The frequent quiet moments of tension and fear as well as the claustrophobic setting and soundtrack create an atmosphere that is rare to find in many modern horror movies. The Collector himself is a great character and one I hope will return in films to come.

DVD/Blu-ray availability

Available on both DVD and BD in the UK and USA

Bad Dreams (1988)

Cast

Richard Lynch, Jennifer Rubin, Bruce Abbott,

Plot (No Spoilers)

In the mid-'70s, a cult group called Unity Field commits mass suicide, but a young girl survives. After being in a coma for thirteen years she wakes up in a psyche ward, not remembering the incident. The psychiatrist tries to help her remember, but she begins seeing the leader of the cult talking to her from the grave, and the other members of her therapy group begin to die around her.

Thoughts

One might find this very reminiscent of Nightmare on Elm Street 3 because of the hospital setting and the casting of Jennifer Rubin, but this stands on its own feet as a very entertaining horror. I won't lie - the main reason for seeing this is the legendary Richard Lynch, who plays the cult leader with a delightful grin and genuine menace. There's also a particularly memorable sequence involving a hallucination, but I won't spoil it for others.

DVD Availability

US Anchor Bay DVD is OOP, but Shout Factory have released an R1 double pack of this and another hospital-set horror, Visiting Hours.

Altered (2006)

Cast

Paul McCarthy-Boyington, Brad William Henke, Misty Rosas

Plot (No Spoilers)

A group of 5 men on a hunting trip are captured and abducted by aliens. Only 4 return. Fifteen years later 3 of the men hunt and capture one in retaliation and they are looking to dish out some payback, but payback swings both ways.

Thoughts

I won’t divulge too much as this is the sort of film that will entertain you more the less you know about it. From the co-director of The Blair Witch Project, this low budget straight to DVD horror/sci-fi affair is well worth tracking down. The claustrophobic setting of the ramshackle cabin helps create tension as the film goes on and it is well written and acted admirably. The special effects are at a minimum but they look great where they count.

DVD/Blu-ray availability

Available on DVD in the UK and BD in Australia.

Blood Creek (2009)

Cast

Michael Fassbender, Dominic Purcell, Henry Cavill, Gerard McSorley, Shea Whigham

Plot (No Spoilers)

A man and his brother on a mission of revenge become trapped in a harrowing occult experiment dating back to the Third Reich.

Thoughts

Blood Creek - despite the big-name director (Joel Schumacher) and cast - was criminally dumped in shit cinemas in the US and has never even been released on DVD here. This is a crying shame, for it's one of the best horror films of recent times. The film begins at a quick pace and doesn't let up, as Purcell returns to the scene of his prior captivity with his brother Cavill to destroy a monstrous Nazi evil played by a truly brilliant (but when is he not?) Michael Fassbender. I've heard it said that Wirth could have been a modern horror icon had this film got the attention it deserved, but alas it did not (though it might have been difficult to get Fassbender back anyway). As it is just enjoy this one for what it is.

100 Feet (2008)

Cast

Famke Janssen, Bobby Cannavale and Ed Westwick

Plot (No Spoilers)

A young woman is granted early release from her prison sentence for manslaughter of her violent cop husband on condition she wear an electronic ankle bracelet and remain within her home, but the 100-foot radius her ankle bracelet allows isn't the worst of her problems, her husband isn't taking death too well.....

Thoughts

As with the vast majority of my posts, this is a modern horror film of which I would probably say is one of my top 5 or so of the past few years. An interesting premise with the ankle tag acting as a key tension device as Janssen really has no escape from her ghostly tormentor. Acting is adequate barring the cunt of a toyboy love interest and the sex scene is prime "skip" material. There is one particularly brilliant death later on in the film which makes it all worthwhile.

DVD/Blu-ray availability

Available on UK DVD and Region Free US BD or from Germany on BD.

Perhaps films like Repulsion, The Haunting of Julia (unavailable) and The Resident? Those sort of lone woman living in house/apartment being tormented by a cunt/supernatural force efforts.

Lake Mungo (2008)

Cast

Various Aussie Unknowns

Plot (No Spoilers)

Sixteen-year-old Alice Palmer drowns while swimming in the local dam. When her body is recovered and a verdict of accidental death returned, her grieving family buries her. The family then experiences a series of strange and inexplicable events centered in and around their home. A series of clues lead the family to Lake Mungo where Alice's secret past emerges....

Thoughts

This is a faux-documentary from Australia, but don't panic - its infinitely better than most other entries into the genre. The film charts the grief of a family following the drowning of their daughter, yet as it progresses you rightly sense all is not as it seems. There's little action and some might deem it slow, but it builds character, with the increasing unsettling tone culminating in a moment that truly chilled me to the bone and played on my mind more than most modern horror films I can remember. Not a jump scare, but one of those old fashioned ones that makes you shudder.

DVD/Blu-ray Availability

Available on DVD in the UK.

Difficult...I suppose you could cite various 'found footage' and 'faux-documentary' titles, but they lack the subtlety and intent of Mungo.

It seems all of mine have been pretty old compared to the films others are suggesting and this suggestion is no different:

Them! (1954)

Cast

James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon

Plot (No Spoilers)

The earliest atomic tests in New Mexico cause common ants to mutate into giant man-eating monsters that threaten civilization.

Thoughts

What most surprised me about this movie was just how impressive the effects were for the giant ants considering how long ago this film was made. There are CGI monsters around today which are a lot less convincing. It's a classic story about a creature mutating because of nuclear radiation causing them to wreak havoc on towns who spend the whole movie denying what is going on and then finally debating how to get rid of the mutants. It is a cracking film.

DVD/Bluray Availability

Available on DVD everywhere, usually can pick it up for a very low price from what I remember. I bought my copy for £3 in store at HMV.

Clownhouse (1989)

Cast

Sam Rockwell

Plot (No Spoilers)

Just before Halloween, three young brothers alone in a big house are menaced by three escaped mental patients who have murdered some traveling circus clowns and taken their identities.

Thoughts

I don't know about you, but the idea of being terrorized by three lunatic clowns on a rainy night in a large house is rather shit-inducing. Clownhouse delivers in this respect, offering entertainment and creeps in equal measure. Definitely worth tracking down but given those Ebay prices I don't want you blaming me if you think it's bollocks.

Aside from Sam Rockwell's first performance, another curiosity about this is the director, Victor Salva, who was convicted for molesting 12-year old star of the film Nathan Forrest Winters, and served 3 years in prison for his disgusting antics. This might make you look at certain shots of the half-naked boys in the film somewhat differently. The foul nonce would later direct the great Nature of the Beast and the Jeepers Creepers films. No I've no idea how he's still working either, but at least he's made some decent films.

Laid to Rest (2009)

Cast

Bobbi Sue Luther, Kevin Gage and Lena Headey

Plot (No Spoilers)

A Young woman wakes up locked in a Coffin. She cannot remember who she is or why she is there but she quickly realises she was abducted by a deranged psychopath with a penchant for recording all his murders with a shoulder mounted camera. Isolated in a rural town she is now being hunted by the Masked killer who intends to finish what he started.

Thoughts

Considering I bought this for under £3 I went into this expecting a cheap movie with laughable acting, a rubbish killer and poor deaths. Fortunately I was mostly wrong with my first fear because barring the main actress who gives a whiney and pathetic performance (I almost gave up watching due to the fact she was awful) the cast aren’t that disgusting. The killer and the deaths however were far beyond my expectations. The look of Chromeskull is great and the effects for a quite a few of the deaths were brilliant, one of my favourite deaths of recent years is in this film involving tyre sealant.

Oh and one deleted scene featuring an interpretation of Rutger Hauers dying quote in Blade Runner is ludicrous but brilliant at the same time.
