Very true Sweey, but you're only saving small money on going with the inferior chip. I was also thinking maybe he might want to OC down the line when he gets more used to the PC scene and pull a bit more out of it.

Let's try and making things simpler, use this site and build me a PC for £700 or less (if possible, I tried a few different combinations and it was always over £700)

What are you picking to get over £700? List that for us and then we'll tweak it. My initial run through has ranged from £561 to £650 depending on certain decisions I make so I want to understand where you and I are differeing on our selections.

We're going with slightly different approaches - I'm going less with the speculative and more strictly with his current requirements. There's a 4690 in play now though

Paying over €100 for windows when it's free now is a kick in the balls.

@Sweey

CPU - intel i5 4460
RAM - Kingston 16gb
Hard Drive - Western Digital 120gb SSD + 1tb HDD

and the rest are the default choices, those choices come to £692, i7 quad core brings it up an extra £100.

Look at what happens to the price when you select two hard drives - one 120GB Samsung SSD and a standard 1TB drive 7200RPM drive rather than the WD dual option.

Removing the card reader saves a further £3
Removing the DVD drive saves a further £17
Upping the PSU to 450W adds £15

I'm sat at £609 right now, well below the £692 you were at.

Can you list what you had? Mine seems to be more than yours, even with your suggestions.

Go to the page and it starts off at £398 including VAT. Then:

Core i5 4460 makes it £453
16GB Kingston Dual-DDR3 RAM makes it £552
120GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD makes it £575
1TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 32MB makes it £614
Remove the card reader to reduce it to £611
Corsair 450W PSU makes it £623
Remove the Office and Anti-Virus software trials which has no monetary effect

So at this point still £623. If you remove the DVD drive you'll save £14 and be at £609.

Still from the £623 point: if you drop to 8GB RAM, upgrade the processor to an i5-4590 and the motherboard to an ASUS Z97-A, it is £605.

Back at the £623 point: if you drop to 8GB RAM and upgrade only the motherboard, it is £591.

Personally I like the 1TB WD Caviar Black as a second drive but it costs £24 more than the one mentioned above.

Would dropping the RAM upgrading the motherboard make much difference?

Some people claim the Z97 motherboard has better audio. Frankly, I doubt that there is any truth behind that.

The main difference is that the H97 motherboard will not allow any overclocking whatsoever but the Z97 will. As you will not be overclocking (which is why the Intel stock cooler is fine), you would probably be fine with the default H97 motherboard.

I don't believe you'll need 16GB RAM but if you're happier having it so that you can run a large number of virtual synths and/or plug-ins at the same time, then I would say that is more important.

I think I'd even get 24gb or 32gb RAM, but that will drive the cost up. I think I'll go with what we've settled on once I get my final student loan through!

@Dundon's @Sweey

So these specs are what I should go for then, from what website,?

Processor - i5 4460
Motherboard - Asus H97M-E
RAM - 16gb Kingston Dual DDR3
Graphics Card - Integrated Graphics Accelerator
1 Hard Drive - Samsung SSD 120gb
2nd hard Drive - 1tb HDD 7200rpm
PSU - Corsair 450W

Call me dumb, but do I need to select a graphics card with HDMI/DVI out etc? Or will it come with those outputs anyway?

Yes that will be good for what you're doing. That motherboard (which has integrated graphics) has HDMI, DVI-D and VGA ports.

I know you're not doing it but you would be beyond mental to go for anything over 16GB RAM unless you have clearly proven that you actually need it.

Of course, 16GB should be fine for now. Can't imagine I'd need more unless I was doing a massive project! Which is unlikely for now!

Cheers for the help, I'll order it when I get my next loan through!

Just to make sure we're on the same page:

The OS and all major applications (audio software, the likes of Office) should be installed on the SSD (the OS may or may not be installed for you, if it isn't you must set the Onchip SATA Type to AHCI in the BIOS before installing the OS). The HDD should be used for ALL temporary music files, different versions of recordings, the processing of live recordings etc. - these either won't benefit from being on the SSD in the first place or will simply serve to reduce the (long and decent) lifespan of the drive.

You can always make backups of finished recordings on the SSD if you want to, so long as the content is pretty static. Let the OS and applications be the reason for lots of writes to the SSD.
