IDE to USB

My dad has a 15 yo computer that as finally given up. We want to retrieve some stuff lost in the old HDD it had, so a IDE to USB convertor might be a good way to do it. Will one of these work, or does it need to have a power suply like this one?

Also, the first one mentiones it has an "IDE 44 Pin connector for internal 2.5 inch HDD". I suppose 3.5'' HDD had similar connectors?

The IDE drive will need power which is why the second one has a power adapter - an adapter that is for IDE drives only and not SATA drives. The first one mentions botrh 44-pin and 40-pin IDE connectors. The second one appears to be 40-pin only which should be fine for a 3.5" HDD.

That was my idea as well. So why would someone sell the first one?

I'll check in a moment if the HDD is indeed 3.5'', I'm almost sure it is but better be safe than sorry. I'll update as necessary.

Makes sense.

Anyway, I got the HDD out and surprise surprise... It isn't 44-pin IDE.

The HDD is a Excelstor Jupiter 160GB j8160, which from here and here can be seen as having a very cool ATA-133 and 40-pin IDC connectors. From a very brief search I've found IDC is the name given to connectors used in IDE devices. Is this right?

Alright, final question for now. Given the computer still gets power (I guess the GPU died, but the rest still works) can I connect the Molex power cable from the desktop to the HDD while having it connected to the laptop with the simpler adaptor, or would it go wrong?

If it gets power, yes.
