United double Roma's bid for Mexes
by Patrick Haond
Auxerre coach Guy Roux claims Manchester United offered an acceptable £10 million sum for Philippe Mexes but admits the defender is still hankering for a move to Roma.
Roux revealed last week that The Red Devils are keen to lure Mexes to Old Trafford but that the player's agent rejected the move due to concerns over regular playing time.
The veteran Auxerre boss has now divulged the amount put forward by United, with the €15 million (£10 million) offer double the figure Roma are currently prepared to pay.
Mexes is believed to be eager to replace Walter Samuel at Stadio Olimpico but Roux insists Auxerre will not be short-changed by the Roman club.
He is happy to allow Mexes to choose his next destination but has warned Roma to dig deep into their pockets if they want to sign the coveted centre half this summer.
"Manchester United made us a €15 million offer," Roux told France Football. "But the player's agent, who recently went to Man Utd, refused it on his behalf.
"It seems he was afraid Philippe would not play there. We were close to finding an agreement.
"Our officials met Franco Baldini, Roma's sport director, but we didn't reach an agreement. The Italian offer is too weak, between €7 and €8 million.
"Roma want Philippe but they have to give an acceptable price.
"When you sell Walter Samuel for more than €24 million to Real Madrid, you can make a beautiful effort for the young Mexes!
"I feel the Romans haven't got so much money. Our first will is to let the player go where he wants.
"However, AJA must not be damaged. Mexes still has two years left on his contract with us."
