My fav is Akira kurosawa. But i think some other Directors had a poll and Orson wells was voted best off all time.

Scorcese or Ridley Scott. I love Ridley Scotts earlier work (Bladerunner, Alien etc). Francis Ford Coppolla isn't too shabby either. And the gut that did American Beauty and Road to Perdition.

I watched The Doors film the other day, but after about 5 minutes I turned over, typical Oliver Stone movie, the direction does your head in.

I think it was Brian de Palma who did Road to perdition same guy who did untouchables.

Good call on Kurosawa, I came into this thread expecting to the old names repeated, Tarantino, Spielberg, Lucas, Scorcese etc... nice to see someone else giving Kurosawa a mention!

I'd be best if we could break it down in to categories. Like Sergei leone made the nest spaghetti westerns, Spielberg futuristic movies, Kurosawa deeply engrossing (with good endings) and the like.

It was Sam Mendes that did Road to Perdition. He directed American Beauty as well which really is a very, very good film.
