Emirates Stadium

The NEw name of Arsenal's Stadium as reported by Arseblog The domain name is being held for Arsenal PLC you can look here http://emiratesstadium.com/

That has to be the most idiotic stadium name ever! I hate it.

What is that about exactly? Is Arsenal's new stadium not called Ahsburton Grove? Are'nt Emirates the sponsors of Chelsea?

The site is Ashburton Grove, but Emirates are the sponsors of the stadium. It's a bit like Bolton's stadium being called the Reebok Stadium.

I'm not that keen on the name yet, but it might grow on me.

I really don't like that, doesn't matter as I'm still going to call it Ashburton Grove, anyway.

same here, i doubt many Arsenal fans will be calling it the Emirates stadium (I certainly hope not anyway), it just doesn't sound right. 'Right mate, im off down the Emirates'
It doesn't overly matter though IMO, they are providing us with huge sums of money and the stadium will still be great, more worrying i think is the fact we will have Fly Emirates as our shirt sponsor from 2006/7 until 2114! As the emirates logo is blue i don't see any hints of blue working on the Arsenal shirt. Just have to wait and see though, i haven't been disapponted by the quality of Arsenal's shirts in a long, long time so hopefully that'll continue.

Isn't it white on Chelsea's home kit though? They'll probably just put a white logo on our home, and probably white on our away kit as well, depending on it's color.

does that mean that Emirates r financing the building of the new stadium? or are they just sponsors? its sort of confusing, because they got their name on it, which means they own it? but, i they own it, then how is it a 15 yr contract only? so after 15 yrs the Stadium name changes? that would be weird...

They don't own the stadium. Arsenal do, It is called 'The Emirates Stadium' for the next 15 years.
The shirt sponsor is a seperate deal for 5 yeras starting in the 2006/07 season(the first of the new stadium)
Next year(2005/06) we will still be O2.

Fly Emirates and Chelsea agreed to break their ties, so Chelsea can get a bigger deal and Emirates can pump more money into Advertsing with Arsenal...

It's basically just advertising for Emirates, their putting their name on the stadium and paying Arsenal 100 million over the next 15 years for it. Arsenal still own the stadium.

I really don't like the idea of sponsoring stadiums, although Emirates Stadium sounds infinite times better than the Nike Arena, especially as we were supposed to pronounce it yank (Nike-eeeeeeeee).

And when that 15 years is up - what happens then? The name of the stadium is changed again to the name of the highest bidder?

Sorry, stadium sponsoring is a horrible idea. Especially for a big club like Arsenal, are any other big European clubs changing the name of their stadium according to sponsors. Big clubs and good stadiums aren't sold out to coroprate companies (Bernabeau, Nou Camp, Old Trafford, San Siro etc...) leave that to Bolton.

Thats thrue Liam, I don't like to agree with you, haha. But It's true big teams shouldn't do this. Apparently we needed to. But we have been alright without Hundreds-of-millions in the bank before.
However, Ajax' stadium is called the 'Sony Amsterdam ArenA' and PSV's is called the 'Phillipstadion' and I believe PSV means 'Phillips Something V'...
One more, FC Bayern Munchen's new stadium is the 'Allianz Airlines Arena'...

Yeah selling the name of the stadium sucks but it's either that or no stadium at all and I know what I'd prefer.
