First Blood - Awesomeness. Got to love Crenna and just how much he bobs his head as he talks, absolute God.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
A thoroughly entertaining comedy-horror that would be impossible not to like. The two protagonists are very likeable while Jesse Moss plays the cunt of the piece extremely well; I was racking my brain trying to think what I'd seen him in - Dear Mr Gacy - where he was also impressive. Some minor criticisms - I'd have liked the ending to be a bit more conclusive rather than open-ended, and I also felt it became a bit too good-hearted the more it went on, losing some of its early edge. Definitely more comedy than horror, but I appreciate innovative films that subvert the conventions of the genre. |

Drive - An entertaining movie with a great central performance from Ryan Gosling and fantastic directing from Winding Refn. The opening scene was put together very well and set up the movie perfectly. There was a lot more gore than I was expecting, especially in a scene remniscent of the fire extinguisher scene in Irreversible - not as extreme though as I believe it has been cut down before submission. A thoroughly enjoyable movie which probably has some depth to it regarding the scorpion and frog reference but it's not necessary to know about it to enjoy this film.

Bad News Bears
--classic, maybe, just maybe, the best sports film of all time. Particularly since most sports films are just bad. |

The Guard (2011)
A brilliant comedy, one of the best I've seen in awhile definitely worth a watch. 8/10 Gantz (2010) I watched this tonight, it's japanese so I had to settle for subtitles which I don't mind. It's classed as a horror which wouldn't really be true they may just have added that because of the violent deaths, so you got action, cool bad guys and an interesting enough plot. 6/10 |

Pa Negre(Black Bread)
It cleaned up at the Goyas so it's no surprise that it's a very good film. Annoyingly it's in Catalan which I can't understand so had to go with subtitles.

Botched
Low budget horror comedy, mostly awful but was still somewhat enjoyable

The Resident
This was good actually - Jeffrey Dean Morgan was great and to be honest I was rooting for him throughout - though the ending was a let down. They hinted at something that would have been far better but went with something a bit wad. |

Nikita - It's quite a good movie but the best parts are definitely when Jean Reno turns up as Victor le Nettoyeur a.k.a. Victor the Cleaner. It was hilarious and ridiculous when he drives full pelt at a brick wall and smashes straight through without damaging the front of the car.

Cry Wolf
A thoroughly enjoyable thriller/horror. Plenty of twists and turns along the way, and for a film mostly set in a school with teenagers, there are surprisingly few if any malignant cunts. Even Bon Jovi gives a decent performance.

Rambo 3 - Definitely the most ambitious of the early films, also the most hilarious. Some of the one liners are quality,
*Rambo falls though fire* "How you feeling?" "Well done" ![]()

Snowtown
This will probably be touted as something stupid like 'this year's Animal Kingdom', but in any case it's actually better. A film involving (but not about, an important distinction) a serial killer (John Bunting, Australia's worse) is never going to be easy viewing, but this film is extremely disturbing and grim I'm talking murder, torture, animal cruelty, incest, paedophilia, rape, a full-frontal shot of an obese woman - how this didn't get the 'Restricted' rating in Australia I will never know. It's not overly violent by any means, but what we do see is among the most affecting I've seen in a long time, while even things merely suggested and which ultimately occur off-screen have a considerable impact on the viewer. The realistic, phenomenal acting only adds to the sense of unease. Lucas Pittaway as Jamie offers one of the best first-time acting performances I've seen, but the film inevitably belongs to Daniel Henshell, who delivers a true tour-de-force performance as John Bunting, at times charismatic and charming, at others violent and psychotic, but always retaining an underlying sense of power and menace perhaps betraying his outward appearance. As good as Ben Mendelson was in Animal Kingdom, Henshell is better. In short, Snowtown is truly masterful film-making and very possibly the film of the year. Another Antipodean masterpiece. |
