Of Gods and Men
Powerful and moving film examining the strength of faith in a small monastery. I was actually shaking during the last 5 minutes. Wont be to everyone's tastes.

The Mikogami Trilogy
Series of three early 70s Japanese films about one Jokichi of Mikogami, a former hired sword who turned to a life of peace only to have his wife and child murdered, after which he embarks on a hunt to find the killers. Superb films, highly reminiscent of the Lone Wolf and Cub series - if you like them then you'll like these also. Some great swordplay and violence as all manners of n'er-do-wells meet well-deserved ends. Only problem is that the series as it is is unfinished. It's obvious they intended to do more but, like Lone Wolf, it just didn't happen. This is a real shame as they could have wrapped it up in three if they wanted, but they obviously wanted originally to 'pad out' the series with some alternate plotlines. Still though a fine series. |

What I've watched recently on Netflix........
Beef 1 , 2 and 3 I really enjoyed the series, maybe not so much for the obvious one's like Tupac and Biggie/Nas and Jay-z and other very famous beef's but more so for the lesser known beef's where you don't know the full background of where the rapper's collided. Like i never knew knew the full origin of the Canibus and LL cool j beef until watching this. Then there's loads of other beef's what i never knew existed at all like Bone thugs and Twista because believe it or not people thought Bone Thugs were biting off him. Great watch for any HIP HOP/Rap fans. Tupac: Uncensored and Uncut: The Lost Prison Tapes Take all the rappers intelligence of today's rappers and put it together and it'd still come short of 2pac's. Brilliant interview. Paid in full One of my favorite films. Must've seen it over ten times...Absoloute classic. Doing Hard Time Guy's 7 year old get's killed by a stray bullet who's father then purposely gets himself locked up to seek revenge on his son's killer. Bit generic but has quite a feel good ending. |

Surrogates - pretty enjoyable. Sort of like I, Robot meets The Island (and at about the same level as those two). Young and plastic Bruce Willis looked hilarious. Pacing of the third quarter was awful and could've been fleshed out across an hour. It flashed by so quickly you could barely keep up with the plot twists.
Rosamund Pike (and a Taylor Cole minor role) ![]()

Super 8
don't waste your time. What bothers me most is that Spielberg and J.J. Abrams probably thought they had a classic. Too much put into trying to recapture E.T. like magic. Kyle Chandler.....c'mon now, you gotta cast better than that. Iron Man 2 shut it off after 5 minutes. Once I saw the overused hollywood scene where the bad guy (Ivan) walks forward with big explosions behind him, but never gives in any mind as if it wasn't happening yet could kill him in an instant, I was finished with this. Not only that, I was quite annoyed at the level Jon Favreau put himself in the film for those first 5 min. |

Defendor - Was expecting a slapstick comedy akin to Kick-Ass but got a real shock. This, while containing some humour derived from the main character, is actually a really enjoyable and somewhat more serious tale of a man (played by Woody Harrelson) who's limited intellect leads him down the path of self thought superhero. A well paced, well written story with Harrelson harking back to his Cheers days and playing the simpleton to a tee! Well worth a watch.

Vanishing on 7th Street - Basically around the concept of Alan Wake. No light, dark beings attack. Only those with illumination survive, but it's made worse as the evil blackness has seems to drain power sources. Average.

Prometheus
My expectations were always going to be dashed but bugger me with a stale baguette they were utterly dashed. Where to begin without spoiling it outside of spoiler tags, firstly this film is a complete mish mash, it lacks a defining theme mainly and worse for me is that it barely explains anything, certainly not in the manner of which the fans would have wanted. It leaves the door open for a sequel but it hardly merits one. The main plot is drawn out and more or less about the Android David as opposed to the evolution of the Xenomorph which is treated as a secondary concern, it gets lost in a plethora of events: An away team investigating a structure on LV-223, the behaviour of David the synthetic being and of course the Space Jockeys. What made Alien so good was how simple it was and how well it did the simple things, Prometheus is nothing like that. Here Scott is clearly hamstrung by budget as the scale of the movie has him cramming in as much in as possible, what is left is a poorly edited and constructed movie. I had several main gripes, firstly the score is fucking awful, it was positively Star Trek-esque and ruined the mood of the film throughout. The script was dreadful, barely believable exposition spouted by characters with no rhyme or reason as to how they would have arrived at such statements other than to move the plot on by about 10 minutes. Often exposition was patently obvious or lacking the punch Scott surely intended. There was little to surprise you even if it did feel like it was desperately trying to. It had the opportunity to end in such a way that it could have tagged onto Alien. Instead the film tried to explore too many avenues, with an awful script and score, wasted acting talent miscast - American's pretending to be English and Vice versa - and no idea of what the end product was supposed to be. A confused mess. |

I don't have particularly great expectations for Prometheus so I hope to enjoy it more than most. Maybe that was your problem Sminky. It was never going to be Alien.
I'll wait for the Blu-ray since I've heard it might have an extended cut, with 20 minutes inserted back in. Ridley Scott didn't confirm this as such on Kermode and Mayo yesterday, but he did pretty much confirm that a longer cut would come at some point. He also said that he hopes to make two more films following Prometheus which would bring us up to the start of Alien. So you shouldn't condemn this for not providing a perfect lead-in as I don't suppose it was ever intended to. |

You're right, I set myself up for a fall (and a fool) thinking he would take from Alien and play it that way. It was just so haphazard, the overriding feeling was: this film has no idea what tone it is trying to set and the characters are so wafer thin, they're nothing more than expendable plot devices. |

Well I'm setting myself up for a fall with The Hobbit if that turns out to be a disappointment. If The Dark Knight Rises underwhelms, it can't bode well.
All I'd say is that the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven turned the film from something ordinary to what I consider fantastic. Hopefully a new edit of Prometheus might do the same. |

The saving grace for a directors cut of Prometheus will be if he can build up to the set pieces properly, instead of the jumping all over the place too-in and fro-in we have in the theatrical version. However I doubt the/any added footage can compensate that much for how badly edited it was though. |

Prometheus
A rather different opinion on it, I loved it personally. Even if it did quite a few questions unanswered (prehaps another prequel/sequel) but overall I was left happy when the credits began to roll and I would reccommend it to anyone who's a fan of the Alien(s) series. |
