World Cup facts

Has anyone got some interesting World Cup facts?

Here's one for starters.

Since 1954, there has only been one World Cup final that hasn't involved either Brazil or Germany. That was 1978, Argentina vs Holland.

Hmm, that is a disturbing fact.

In 1954 Hungary scored the most ever team goals in a world cup. 27.

This is the first World Cup where a country that doesn't exist is being represented.

Serbia and Montenegro dispanded as one single country before the tournament, but are still represented as one by the team.

France have not scored in the World Cup since 1998 when they beat Brazil 3-0 at Saint Denis. They are currently on a 4 game streak with the record belonging to Bolivia, 5.

In the World Cup 1966 24 of the 32 matches were refereed by Europeans - the South Americans appealed but England refused to allow the change. Argentina and Brazil were the pre tournament favourites but both teams eliminations were effected by refereeing calls - The Argentina captain being sent off and teh constant unpunished fouling of Pele by the Portugese

Henri Michel has led three different teams to three consecutive World Cup tournaments, Morocco (1998), Tunisia (2002) and Cote d'Ivoire (2006)

Bora Milutinovic still has the record with five teams at World Cup, Mexico (1986), Costa Rica (1990), the United States (1994), Nigeria (1998), and China (2002).

Amazingly, all of the teams got through the first round, except China.

Seen this on VH1 earlier today.

Oldest goalscorer in the World Cup was 42 years and 39 days, Roger Milla ( Cameroon), Cameroon vs Russia, World Cup 1994.

That is a pretty cool fact especially the qualifying for the later stages when you look at the teams he had then again he had the host nation in 1986 and 1994

He did indeed do that, wasn't that the most goals ever scored in the one match?

Before England's 2-0 win on Thursday, they hadn't scored a goal in the second half since the 98 World Cup.

The smallest crowd to watch a World Cup game was the 300 who showed up to the game between Romania and Peru during the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay.

India refused to play in the 1950 World Cup because FIFA told the players they would have to play in football boots, rather than barefoot.
