Wigan Confirm Bid For Heskey

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ic/5154218.stm

Quote:
Wigan manager Paul Jewell has put in a bid for Birmingham striker Emile Heskey after having an approach for Robbie Savage rejected.

Jewell confirmed an official offer had been made for the 28-year-old former England frontman.

But his hopes of signing Savage, 31, from Blackburn were ended when Rovers said the midfielder was not for sale.

Jewell told Wigan's website: "It shows our ambition that we're targeting some top Premiership performers."

Wigan are desperate to land a proven striker after selling Jason Roberts to Blackburn for £3m and missing out in the chase for Andy Johnson.

Jewell said: "Emile is a proven performer at Premiership and international level and we have made what we consider to be a very good offer to Birmingham City.

"It is not normal for this club to comment on targets until the player has signed. But in this instance it's an open secret that we've made the bid.

"I think he's a player who could do very well for us, but we'll see how the situation develops."

Aye, a year ago, when he paid £2m for David Connolly and tried to sign Dean Windass for 500k.

to be honest mate i've always rated Hargreaves.

Bunch of people from my work whingeing about him saying he shouldn't be playing cos they're too fucking ignorant to look past the Premiership and see how well he performs for Bayern.

But we've all seen Heskey week in week out and he's not good enough for the Premiership, he was exciting at Leicester, bit pacy, well built but 90% of the time he has no end product.

But how many of you have watched Heskey week in and week out ? You see him on MOTD and thats it. Heskey works harder than almost every forward Ive seen in 25 years of watching football and he contributes so much.

He spent all of last year as a lone striker and did the job well - blame Steve Bruce for what happened at Birmingham, not Heskey, he was one of the few success stories last season

Do you know what mate, you might be right.

He does work hard no doubt about it but in all honesty even you must admit he aint worth the transfer fees he's comanded.

He's an average player, just not a Premiership starter for a top 10 club.

I wouldnt say he was average - not good enough for your Chelsea and Man Utds of this world I agree, but being a goal scorer isnt his job. His partnership with Forsell should be good if Forsell can ever get fit.

Heskey is surprisingly good out wide too.

One thing I noticed though , in 4 games against Liverpool and 5 against Aston Villa, Carragher and Mellberg diidnt win one header against him - and thats not an exaggeration

He's a similar type of player to Jason Roberts so i can see why Jewell would want him.
