Techie Question
I am hoping someone can help me here. I have a Belkin router but am fairly sure one of my neighbours is stealing my broadband. This is really frustrating and I end up stealing someone else's.
But the simple solution would be if I, and only I, could use my brooadbad so that it doesnt slow down as other people jump on it. So if anyone uses a Belkin router do you know how to password protect it so that noone else can share my connection remotely, unless I give them the authority to do so. Many hotels and internet cafes do this now with Wireless connections. They issue a short number to their residents/customers that allows thenm to use their internet using their own machines. Any help would be gratefully receieved.

Go to the IP address of your router (default is 192.168.1.1) and if it is set there, find the setting to move it elsewhere - and remember where. It is the first place hackers etc. look because most people don't alter the default settings.
You should also be able to change the password required to connect via the router and limit the number of machines that can connect through the router. Don't have a Belkin router so don't know exactly which screens but the first bit is on the Basic Setup screen with a value I can put for "Maximum DHCP Connections" and the second bit is in Wireless -> Wireless Security. |

Thatw ill stop people using my broadband ? My father ahs this plug in thingy (like a memory stick) that he can use in his laptop and drive around until he finds someones broadband - then he can just jump onto their service.
I am looking through the Belkin software which isnt particularly helpful, nor is the paperwork they send you when you originally buy the Router. Is MAC Address filtering the type of thing I should be looking at ?

Nah mate, what you want to do is:
- Go over to your router, and locate the cables at the back, remove them, it is important to do this before the next stage. - Take said Belkin router, toss it as far as you can out of a second story window... if it lands within sight of your house, take your car and drive over it... twice. - Now purchase a Linksys router, set-up your new router which should take approximately twenty to forty minutes depending how proficient you are. Sit back, relax as you and only you will enjoy your broadband on a secure and very steady home network. |

Using Linksys here.Huw, most people leave everything at their defaults - IP address, password, everything. That leaves the router set in some cases to open status where it will accept any connections. Think of it as a prostitute that doesn't charge; it'll let anyone have a go. That's why your dad can happily do that. A guy I work with uses his laptop in his car sometimes outside of our place and can pick up a wireless internet connection from somewhere in the area because of this. Happens a lot. |

Hope that helps even more. Edit-Oops that has nothing to do with setting up a password. http://www.iinet.net.au/support/wire..._security.html

Agreed when my BT HellHub goes down I often pick up the neighbours... I can't wait until I move somewhere with a decent ISP available.
Huw, while I'm not offended, I strongly recommend this product if you're with cable broadband, which you should be as Virgin Media will be an excellent service in your area as it's on the old Telewest part of the network grid. |

there two routes wep/wap and mac filter
wep/wap is a encryption setting (password type thing) which is break able mac filter, you set up which machine can access the router, so if you haven't entered the mac number in to the router it will block it and stop every thing, easily got and entered.
