Paul Jewell Resigns As Wigan Manager

Quote:
Paul Jewell has stepped down as manager of Wigan Athletic.

Jewell guided The Latics to Premiership safety with a win at Sheffield United on the final day of the season.

However, he will not be in charge for a third season in the Premiership as he has decided to step down from the JJB Stadium helm.

"Wigan Athletic have confirmed that manager Paul Jewell has stepped down as manager of the club, with immediate effect," read a statement on the club's website. "Chairman Dave Whelan will be addressing the media at 3.00pm this afternoon."

Jewell in tandem with chairman Dave Whelan guided The Latics to the Premiership in 2005 and he has proved to be a hugely popular figure in the North West.

He has expressed frustration this term with the club's failure to bring in big-name players and it would appear as if Jewell feels he has taken the club as far as he can.

Sky Sports News are claiming Wigan are keen to make a swift appointment in order to hand the new man the entire summer to plan for next term.

Jewell spent six years at Wigan and led them to two promotions, but his finest achievement arguably has been in guiding the club to Premiership safety.

Quite a surprise if it is true especially after only just staying up yesterday. I would have thought Paul and the Chairman would have at least waited a while and thought over the decision.

However I really couldn't care less, can't stand the guy or the club.

I'm genuinely surprised, seems as though he's maybe intimidated by another relegation battle ?

Pearce already has a job, the England U21's. I would kind of like Jewell at City, he did brilliantly in his first season with Wigan, but its difficult for a club like that to attract players and keep your good ones. Roberts, Chimbonda, Bullard, Francis, their best players all left after they made a name for themselves in Wigan's first season. He's done his best with what he's got, if he was in charge of a bigger team he might get more joy.
