Do I really need a modchip?

Do I really need a modchip to play we6:fe. A friend told me that he downloaded the game from edonkey and it works without a chip. I´m not interested in downloading it, I would buy we6:fe, but only if it works without a chip because modchips and installation(I´m not very talented in this things so somebody else has to install the chip for me) are very expensive here in Germany.

An alternative to mod chips is using a flip top lid or the knife trick.
These are cheaper but require the use of PS2 boot disks which you have to swap every time you want to load a game.
Mod chip lets you just put the game in and it works.

It's unlikely your friend made the game work unless he used one of these 'methods' or maybe he has a Japanese PS2.

If a chip is too expensive or too much trouble, another option is to buy a pre-chipped PS2 which is what I did.
It's more expensive initially but saves a lot of disk swapping and is generally less hassle, I find.

Check these out for info:

Slide Card

Flip Top Lid

Flip Top Lid 2

Flip Top Lid 3

Boot Disks

There are different prices and as I have not used any of these, maybe someone can should advise on which is the best place to buy from.

Description for Boot Disks from the last link:
"A SIMPLY SINGLE SWAP is all that is required (even for DVD games!).Just put in the CD or DVD boot disk and let it load up. You will be then be prompted to "insert game disc". Just lift out the boot disk (completely stopped!!) & insert your backup / import. Thats all there is to it!."

There's also a video to see how it works.

Can you use an imported game such as WE6:FE on a PS2 without a modchip or flip top lid if you make a patched copy of the game?

No. It's just the same as the original.

What's the point of patching the game then? Is it just to make a copy of it?

Patching gives you all this:

Updated teams,
Corrected national and club kits with all the logos and sponsors,
New advertising boards (PS2, Ford, McDonalds & lots more),
The Champion's League ball (to play with on the pitch)
Edited stadiums,
New crowd chants,
New menu pictures and music.
(Choose your own tunes to replace the default game ones)

And the ability to do lots more.

There are currently different patches for:
All national teams replaced by extra European clubs (check the Wendetta thread to see which ones) plus all clubs are made into Italian league teams,
Clubs replaced by full English Premiership + Div 1.
Lots of classic national teams,
And more.

Check out the threads or pages of the patches to see what they are like.

Confused !!

I am confused, I saw all the websites Zygalski posted, they look OK, but I am afraid to buy with my credit card. Are thoes websites real ones? Can someone give a good advise on where can I buy a good tool to play all imports and backups. I am confused with all the chips and different tricks out there. I am willing to buy anything, as long as it works and its safe. Anyone? !!
