Immediately Scholes and Giggs came to mind due to, even now, how huge their importance to the team (of United's calibre) is. Ridiculously consistent over the years.

If Sol Campbell can play as well for Newcastle as he did for us last season, then he's definitely 'still got it'

Campbell in his prime > Vidic in his prime. Might not mean much, but regardless.

Sol Campbell was good but he was hardly of the same calibre as the other players mentioned in this thread. I don't think you can really compare Vidic in his prime as he is probably still in it at the moment and for all you know, could be for a long time. That said, I'd say Vidic may be a little over-rated at times but I'd say Ferdinand in his prime was a better player than Sol Campbell.

Between the end of his Tottenham days and before his last season at Arsenal (first stint), Sol Campbell was easily England's best defender. In fact, he was one of the best defenders in Europe.

Rogério Ceni, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Francesco Antonioli, Filippo Inzaghi (he never had it, but what he does, he still does well), David Beckham, Marcos, Dejan Petkovic, Paulo Baier, Martín Palermo...

Beckham definitely isn't a patch on what he once was, in his teenager days for Man Utd and England. He's injured most of the time now aswell anyway.

Campbell was a beast. He couldn't half jump.

Sol was the best English centre half since Adams. I'm sure Rio learnt a lot from him during their days at the back for England. Ferdinand in his prime looked far more elegant but give me Sol anytime when it came to actual defending.

Fair enough Sol could head a ball, was a great tackler and stopper but I wasn't too impressed with his positioning a lot of the time. Sometimes he tended to ball watch. I wouldn't ever argue that physically Rio is better than Sol but in terms of positioning and actually looking comfortable on the ball, Rio wins hands down.
Campbell was never overrated, as is evident in this thread where I'm pretty much the only one not rating him as highly. |
