stop cheaters with a "sportmanship rating"

hi,

Being cheated on is one of the most common complaints of online players.

Here is my idea on how to (at least) partly solve this issue:

Konami should allow players to rate each other on "sportsmanship." The way ebay ratings work.

After a match you can "flag" the other person if they misbehave. If they score own goals, disconnect or if they go overboard with pausing, replaying, taunting, etc. You give them a bad rating.

If that person gets continuous bad ratings their rating will be poor and people can simply avoid/ban him or her. Konami could also limit entry into tourneys to people with a fair sportmanships score for example.

I think it is about time. Something like this would allow the community to self regulate, in real time and online.

any thoughts?
cheers

yes good idea!

but a lot of other things would have to change as well. For example, in order to avoid playing against these flagged players, we would need a new quick match system, with filters, or at least the choice not to play against someone who is flagged.

well you have to factor in people's honesty in these ratings, I'm sure with the amount of kids playing, they'd simply give you a negative for beating them, so i don't think its a good idea

A very mature idea. Unfortunately for the proper players, the community is not so mature.

As lyc10 said, people would give negatives being beaten, leading to people complaining that they're getting unfairly judged, and more work for Konami.

yes, this definitely relies in people giving honest ratings, (if they choose to give a rating at all. it would be optional.) And i guess you can argue that if people were honest, then why are we talking about cheating at all.

But a lot of these kids are probably also fed up with the cheating and might appreciate an attempt to controlling cheaters

And self regulation by online communities seems to work in a lot of cases I think. Ebay relies on people's honesty and it seems to work very well. Yes, yes....it is a different thing since it implies money, credit cards, non anonymity and users are probably older/more mature/more serious.

And idiots might give you a bad rating unfairly. But, the more you play the more your rating is likely to reflect your real behavior.

a more robust solution (maybe a lot more complicated) could take into account the ratings somebody gives. If somebody always gives negative ratings...the system might begin disregarding the ratings this person gives.

It seems to me like a system of this sort makes a lot more senses than trying to pass around a list of cheaters.

Self regulation is an ideal, but as has been said, it's open to abuse. If you have a 3rd party overseeing users ratings then surely it defeats the object of the self regulating system? Plus, who would do it?

Even the 'penalise for quitting' system isn't really an option. All it takes is an average/poor connection & people get penalised for things that might be out of their control.

A rating system would take out a lot of the online frustration, but until it can fairly and automatically take into account these variables, then it will remain a player pipe-dream.

I would prefer some sort of automatic tracking system that records how many own goals and disconnects you have. If its above an acceptbale level than the user can be temporarily banned from tournaments and even quick matches.

To those with a shitty internet connection, if you are dropping out from a significant % of your games then do everyone a favor and upgrade your connection or stop playing online. I know it sounds harsh but how can you expect to play if your connection is causing you to drop out from lots/most of your games?

I suspect the amount of honest people with ridiculous disconnection rates is very small. For the greater good it'd be best to just implement what I mentioned above. Tournament exclusions would hit many of the cheaters hard in the face.
