The armband should only be given to a true leader. Someone on the pitch with both the respect and authority to influence his team, not just some trophy for an arm waiving Muppet.

There hasn't been a real team captain "worth" the armband for many years. The England team died the day they got large pay packets for representing their country, win or lose.

True but it barely matters anymore because of it, we may as well give it an arm waving muppet for all the difference it will make. The days of an English player leading by example has somewhat changed, from the alcoholic bulldog spirit to a picking up minors, fucking your mates girlfriends and casual racism (allegedly).
