To change kicking direction in a free kick, press R1 or L1 as the power bar is on the screen. Pressing it before or after will do nothing, maybe leading you to believe it's done something. It hasn't. In open play (not a free kick) it does nothing for your shot, as R1 is the low chip.

No, it's just the timing of L1 or R1 press. You can take it from me, these buttons do nothing to affect curl, but they do allow you to craft clever curlers by aiming wide of the mark and dragging it in, which you are probably describing. Trust me, I'm a PES doctor.

It's all down to the individual players curling stat, the higher the number the more curl you'll get. I knew there was a use for it somewhere.
