Arrows = Happiness?

On Master League, when you look at your team on the negotiations screen, when you press left and right 3 arrows come up next to their names. 1 diagonally up to the right, one horizontal to the right, and one diagonally down, are these their happiness levels? or whether their skills are going up or down?

It tells you how they will develop.

Up = Player will improve.
Right = Player has improved all he can.
Down = Player's stats are dropping.

They do change though. Take Van der Vaart or Quaresma, for example. Their progress goes down (down arrow) to start with, then after a season, the arrow point up.
