Goalie control during long free kicks ???

I have been having issues getting control of my goalie during free kicks. For example a free kick is given somewhere on my half of the field, maybe around the half field area. The person takes a long kick into my penalty area where my defender is along against his offensive player. It becomes a 50/50 situation where the offensive player usually gets the header especially if its someone like Ronaldo. At this point, if I could take my goalie out using the triangle I could punch the ball out or even catch it and avoid the 50/50 chance the ball gets headed into my goal.... Am I missing something here? WHy cant I get control of my goalie??

L1 + R3 gives you control of your keeper. Try that and also try reading the manual. That's how I learned.
