Looking After Your PS2

This is how to look after your PS2 :

Cleaning the grills

Cleaning the grills is very important, and best to be done on a regular basis. I find that once or twice a month is enough. I have found the best way to clean the vents is to get a hoover, set it onto a medium/low setting and gently hold the nozzle around 2 inches from the grills and then at the same time gently push the bristles of a tooth brush into the grills, and what should happen is the dust on the grill becomes loose by the friction of the tooth brush, and then the hoover will suck up the dust before any loose dust gets inside the PS2. It also helps if the tooth brush is slightly damp, as some of the dust will stick to it rather than fall inside the PS2.

Cleaning the fan

The best way to clean the fan is to simply take a cotton bud, dip it into a little bit of water so it's slightly damp, and just remove any unwated dust from the fan and the surrounding area.

Removing dust from the Disc Tray

Dust in the disc tray can be a problem, both on the tray itself (causing games to get scratched) and on the sides of the tray (causing noisy operation)
Again, take a cotton bud, damp the end and just gently brush away the unwanted dust from both the sides of the tray and the tray itself. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this may damage the disc tray mechinism, so be gentle.

Shutting off the PS2

Make sure you always put the PS2 onto standby BEFORE you switch the PS2 off from the main power switch at the back. Although some people claim to do this with no problems, it IS bad for the PS2 and may eventually cause problems.

Removing the disc when transporting the PS2

Always make sure you take out any disc inside the PS2 before you move the PS2 around, as the disc may get scratched and you may damage the laser.

Don't play for too long! VERY HARD NOT TO

Playing for extended periods of time will not only put stress on the console itself, but will cause the disc to get hot. This may cause some troubles because when the disc and disc tray get hot, circular scratches have been known to appear around the discs. Try to let it cool off every now and then.

Other notes

The main killer of PS2's and the main cause of DRE's (Disc Read Error's) is dust. Dust is evil. You wait to avoid dust at all costs, it's even a good idea to place something over the PS2 when not in use to keep dust off, but this is not essential. As long as you perform regular maintenance and clean it from time to time, your PS2 should stay happy and dust free.

I hope my guide will help you to prolong the life of your PS2's and will help you keep it in good working order. Please don't hesitate to add any of your own methods of keeping your PS2 clean and healthy, as there may be something I've missed or you may have stumbled across some better methods of maintaining your PS2.

SLIDE TRAY + FLIP TOP

If you use these methods esp. the slide tray and leave the disc tray cover off, you should cover it with the white paper you get with your PS2 as it does not attract dust particles(I got this from jag's thread). After you finish playing the game cover it and sellotape it (no sellotape on the PS2 though)
