Wing Backs Vs. Side Mid-fielders

What are the pro's and cons when comparing these 2 positions both on defense and attack support (vs. Human opponents). Depending on how attack arrows are set, how far back will SMF's play on defense and how far forwards will WB's play on the attack??

I find that WB's play a little further back - useful for a defensive team. I play SMF's though, to give my forwards support, as it normally takes WB's a little longer to get forward.

It depends on how you want to play, a lot of people consider wing backs with three at the back because the defence is other wise vulnerable from crosses and wide play. Other people on the hand are open to taking that risk and are willing to play side midfielders and attack more.

If you play attacking football you will leave gaps at the back, it's inevitable, so it all comes down to just how attacking you want to go.

That's completely correct. I, for instance, am a very attacking minded player, and so play 2 SMF's, and by retaining all the possession, prevent the opposition from scoring.

It depends on the situation...for example, if your opponent attacks mainly from the wings (e.g. 4-3-3 formation), you'll probably not want to use WBs because your defence will be exposed...similar explanation, you could use WBs if you know your opponents like to cram up in the middle of the field...

I NEVER play to suit my opponenet's formation - I ALWAYS play my own formation, as it is one I KNOW works well, I KNOW which player will be where, etc.

"Does anyone think having a RWB & LWB compensates for having 3 CB's at the back?"

Get me Roberto Carlos and Kafu and the answer is yes.

I remeber in WE7, Classi Brazil formation was 2-4-4

It worked Vs. CPU then, but with WB instead of SMF, defense is complete and I can use it against human players. Hey! I learned this from the same guys that made this game! You can't top this baby. Only the best players in CB, WB, CMF and the best coaches (as in WE players) need apply.

Just to avoid having a formations fiesta, give suggestions to formations restricted to using WBs please.

Using wing-backs depends if you want to play attacking football or not. If you aren't going to play attacking football then just play SB's instead of WB's or it will be too easy for the opposition to counter attack and score.

Besides, six players instead of the usual four in middle field leads to higher ball possession rate. Just don't lose the ball.

After experimenting further with the WBs, I'm sorry to admit that 2 CBs with WBs isn't defensively stable against long passes.

To bring back stability without sacrificing the superior offense supplied by the WBs, I moved my WBs back into SB possession, coppied the formation of SBs into "formation A" in the "strategy menu" (by pressing "copy to Formation A"), entered formation A, entered "edit position" and moved the SBs forward into WB position, then I assigned one of the four face buttons to manually activate formation A by the pressing the dedicated face button While holding :R2:. Finally I can activate formation A whenever I cut the ball and start attacking, and turn it off whenever I lose the ball. It aint easy trying to coach football and play it in the same time but the final shape of your team is worth the effort.
