Name: (Gabriel) Batista
Nationality: Argentina
Height: 188
Weight: 78
Position: CF/SS
Club: Espanyol
Club I'd like: Barca/Real/Man Utd/AC/Inter
Difficulty: Regular

First game I ever played after buying PES09 was in BAL Mode. Released a winger who set up the 88th minute winner in my first match, got a 6.0 or 6.5 or something. Had offers from Bilbao, Almería and some other team even worse than Almería; decided to go with the middle option as I wasn't sure I'd make it into the best team and I thought the worst would be frustratingly terrible. Got number 27... seemed like destiny, as that's the day of my real-life birthday!

Was sent off in my first training match for Almería after about 75 mins, when we were 2-0 down. No complaints really, it was a horrific challenge. Either way I struggled through another 2 training matches on the default camera angle, before making the 'A' team in training. I changed the camera to wide, with the focus on the ball, and suddenly I could play a bit better. Found the net in my 3rd training match and made the bench; came on at half-time when 1-0 down, scored twice on my debut and won us the match (one of very few Almería won that season). 3 sub appearances later and I was in the starting lineup.

There's much, much more, but I'll post it when I look at Batista's stats a bit later; I'm currently on a different BAL - (Cristóbal) Horacio, a classy little CM. Guess I'll post his story before long as well...

Batista continued...

Went on to make 19 appearances for Almería, many of which were extremely frustrating as I was isolated up front on my own, with only Pablo Piatti (LMF/AMF) showing any sort of creativity out of all my teammates. I was still being rotated with 2 other atrocious CFs due to my poor stats and low reputation but still managed 6 goals, and we were flirting with the relegation zone. January arrived and I decided to move on, with an average evaluation of 6.21.

Mallorca were the best team to come in for me, and I jumped at the chance to play with attacking players like Arango, Trejo and Webó, all of whom are good on PES09. I got shirt number 28.

By this time I'd discovered the "strengthen" option, and decided to put 6 in balance. I've modelled Batista on Gabriel Batistuta, as many of you may have guessed, and it didn't seem right that I could even be pushed off the ball by most players under 5'6''.

Anyway, I made it into the Mallorca team fairly swiftly, rotating with Webó (their top scorer) and Trejo, and playing at SS a few times. The 2nd half of the season brought more frustration but also more joy, as I made 19 more appearances, scored 6 more goals and got 1 assist, helping Mallorca to a respectable 11th place finish. So, the 2008/9 season looked like this:

Appearances: 38
Goals: 12
Assists: 1
Average rating: 6.21

Decided to stick with Mallorca over the summer, because I accidentally accepted their offer in week 1 of the negotiation period more than anything else. Anyway, I noticed a marked improvement in my general play in my 2nd season, making 21 appearances and notching 10 goals and 1 assist in the first half of the season at an average of 6.26. Over January, Espanyol came a-knockin', offering the number 9 shirt... I couldn't refuse.

Made it into the first team very quickly again (think I was on the bench straight away...), and at his new club Batista really began to find his feet. Before long he was keeping Raúl Tamudo out of the team and had taken the captain's armband off him. It's worth pointing out that until this point most of my goals had been 'odd', in that despite my poor stats I'd shoot at every given opportunity (I lacked the pace or the power to beat most centre backs), and scored several floated long range goals. However Espanyol really gave me the chance to shine as a centre forward, and most of my goals were more typical 'striker' goals, including a tap-in winner in a 1-0 scraped win against Real Madrid after a shocking bit of play by Pepe, their centre half. My average evaluation soared at my superior new club and in my new no.9 shirt, and I got 10 goals and 3 assists in 25 appearances at 6.5 average, firing us to 7th in the league and the Cup Semi-Final.

2009/10:

Appearances: 46
Goals: 20
Assists: 4
Average rating: 6.39

The next season kicked off with a bang; suddenly I was the darling of Espanyol (I was enjoying my time with them so I thought I might as well stay!), and was scoring for fun. My stats had improved immensely and after reaching the quarter finals of the World Cup with Argentina, playing with Messi, Riquelme and Tevez among others (and picking up a goal in my 2nd substitute appearance for my country out of 5, before losing on penalties to Spain) Batista's confidence was on a high. It's about 2/3 of the way through the season - out of loyalty, I turned down Real Madrid over January - and Espanyol are riding high at the crest of the wave of Batista's goals, top of the league (2 points clear of Barcelona, champions the last 2 years), in the quarter finals of the Masters Cup and Semis of the Cup. Made 3 further appearances for Argentina, scoring 2 goals, and have played 30 games so far this season for Espanyol, scoring an outrageous 29 goals, including 25 in the league (top scorer by 10 goals!), at an average of 6.76. Highlights include scoring both in the 2-0 away win over Real Madrid (making Cannavaro look a fool in the process) and notching the first 4 goals in a 6-1 mauling of Osasuna, Batista's first career hat-trick.
