Definitely, and i'd like to say Beynd thought has been spot on for most of this long drawn out arguement.
Let me just say, i've been playing International Superstar Soccer since N64, years before Iss pro evolution came out on PSX. I had ISS 2000 on N64 so let me start by saying, Pro NEVER copied become a legend from FIFA, ISS had their idea 9 years ago, way before EA did their version of it.
Quite simply Pro evolution soccer has been on the decline since it tried to go next generation in 2007-2008. This is where the problems began, but I think the simple fact, is that Pro evolution has been sold out, gone commercial, Pop, if you like.
Years ago on PSX the game didnt have the mass popularity it did now, mainly because it wasnt a pick up and play compared to the other offerings out there, the things which made the game stand out for me back then was the freedom the game gave you. Im talking in terms of player movement, tactics, finishing, the player animations were far superior to anything out there, players were genuinely two footed, players were individual in terms of having unique skill sets which benefited your team in different ways. Most of all, the game made you think about how to break down opposition using passing, accuracy and tactics, and these great things were present in both single and mutiplayer.
The days of konami making a great football game, purely for the sake of making a great game, are over. These days Konami doesnt want to cater for the original audience that bought into the idea of a standalone small team of guys who took on the Corporate EA trash and embarassed them for many years.
Because thats what pro evolution soccer was about, a couple of guys, who took on an empire by simply making a game which catered to true football fans, a game which didnt sell out gameplay for licenses and a game that was so realistic for its time, its didnt need a single license.
PES is not Pro Evolution Soccer in my eyes, PES is a watered down, arcade, pick up and play, corporate evil twin. Back in the day, Pro evolution soccer was numbered, because when it was ready, it was ready. None of this rushing one out every fucking year regardless of how shit it was, (like Fifa 97-2007). So when the named changed to PES 2008, alarm bells started ringing.
The game clearly hasnt moved on anymore, simple as that, years ago, the powerbar meter was actually a big thing, on FIFA, you just pressed a button and the ball goes in the top corner end of. These days, that idea doesnt mean as much, it hasnt added enough touches, to warrant the cash people pay for it.
I had copies of PES 2009 on XBOX 360 snd PS2, game was absolutely shocking, how anyone who has played pro from day 1, can look at themselves and say this is an improvement over ANY pro evolution Soccer game (aka 1-6), I dont know.
Some of the few flaws with this version, none of which have been solved since PES 2008 (one of the worst football games in recent years)
-Horrible passing
-8 directional movement
-Shocking Music and commentary
-Clunky shooting and finishing
-More AI Scripting (the test for AI scripting is Top player, exhibition, Vs Barca at nou camp, see how times you play them without conceding crazy goals)
-Rubbish stadiums, for some reason a few of them still in Portugal (there is a better stadium choice in the ps2 version, which itself is embarrassing)
-Tired Shooting animations.
-Same old master league which has hardly changed a bit since PES 3 (contrary to what others think, this was arguably the best pro evo, i can talk about that another day)
-Awful player movement, players actually running away from goal on the attack etc.
-Shocking Crowd Chanting/Sound of ball
I can explain all these points and much much at length if needed.
Bottom Line is this, after 10 years of making shocking games, EA sports listened to their fans, and the role have clearly been reversed, FIFA 09 plays more like the PS1/PS2 versions of Pro evo and Pro evo is playing more and more like the awful FIFA game, its a sick joke, but its the case. The only way pro evolution soccer can come back is when the people are ready to dissect the problems and demand a change.
Standing by and praising Konami (ok seabass) for ruining 10 years of good work in the space of two video games wont solve any problems, identifying problems, solves problems.
Its not about Loyalty, its about playing the best football game.
