Assassins Creed Brotherhood

Kotaku has been sent an image of the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's placeholder box art, presumably by a rogue GameStop employee. Ubisoft confirmed the image as legit, officially revealing the next title in the Assassin's Creed series starring Ezio Auditore de Firenze, and in turn confirming the veracity of a handful of details contained on the back of the temporary box art. The blurb reads, "Live and breathe as Ezio, now a legendary master assassin, in his struggle against the Templar order. Lead your own brotherhood of Assassins and strike at the heart of the enemy: Rome. And for the first time, take part in an innovative multiplayer layer allowing you to embody an assassin of your choosing and define their killing style."

As you've likely guessed by now, this is the spinoff that Ubisoft revealed to be in production a few months back -- the same spinoff spotted in a domain name registration just two weeks ago (which lends more credibility to the possibility that the next Driver game will be based in San Francisco, we suppose). The tiny screenshots seen on the back of the placeholder art additionally boast "A never-before-seen online multiplayer experience" and the ability to "Lead your own brotherhood of assassins, as Ezio, and conquer Rome." As you can see on the right side, a pre-order sticker advertises the pre-order bonus of an "exclusive multiplayer character." Kotaku thinks it could be Altair, but we're gonna be rebels and hope for Renaissance-era Sam Fisher. That's synergy, baby!

Update: A Ubisoft rep told Joystiq, "Ubisoft confirms the authenticity of this image and will provide more information next week."

Ubisoft has announced that Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will ship on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in late 2010.

This is the episodic instalment that brings multiplayer to the series.

The single-player story follows ACII hero Ezio in another battle with the Templar Order. He'll begin as a Master Assassin, command the entire Brotherhood and take the fight to Rome, where Pope Roland Ratzinger lives.

Multiplayer reverses roles and has us control Templars via the regression chair at fictional baddie-company Abstergo. You'll be able to choose from a variety of characters, each with their own signature weapon and techniques.

Ubisoft promises different game modes, but doesn't go into detail.

Ubisoft has finally unveiled the first of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's multiplayer modes. It's called Wanted, and it sees the historical shiv-'em-up venturing online far more successfully than the last game's DRM ever did.

Wanted is available for up to eight players at a time, and sees you hitting the streets of Rome to carry out contract murders. Every match will begin with each assassin being given a rival player to track down and take out, and the game keeps tabs on who's the most deadly and balances itself accordingly.

That means that if you're handy with the steel - a bit like Warren G - you can expect to have four or five hooded menaces heading your way to mess things up for you fairly regularly. APB works in kind of the same way, but you can't almost certainly climb up guttering while wearing a ruff in APB.

As with every other multiplayer game made from now until the day the sun explodes or a nearby galaxy tears the Milky Way to pieces, there's an XP system in place, allowing you to customise your character and upgrade things as you level up.

It's worth mentioning that, in keeping with the tone of the single-player game, Wanted won't just reward you for kills but for the style with which you pull them off.

Cowards will be pleased to hear that you'll also be showered with points for successfully running away from danger too.

It's brilliant stuff by the looks of it, offering a devious competitive twist to the main game, while revelling in the standard Assassin's Creed business of scampering up the wall of a building and titting around in haystacks as you fight on a range of maps covering various districts of Rome.

Ubisoft's apparently had people working on multiplayer content for well over a year, and you can expect all of the different modes to incorporate free roaming, free running, and "social stealth" to some extent.

Fans of the series' fiction, meanwhile, will be interested to hear that you're actually playing as a Templar in Wanted, as you take on the role of an Abstergo trainee stuck in one of those Animuses you may have run past during Assassin's Creed II's slightly wonky opening sequence.

Please dress accordingly, eh?

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will be in UK shops on 19th November, Ubisoft has confirmed.

The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will all be released on the same day.

Brotherhood continues stab master Ezio's story, and will include multiplayer for the first time in the successful series.

The game is due out on 16th November in the US.

Be sure to check out Christian's preview from E3 2010, then have a gander at the trailer, which explains how the campaign will work, below.

Ubisoft has announced the forthcoming release of a Collectors' Edition of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

It will include two extra single-player maps, a real-life strategy map of Rome, an art book and a special jack-in-the-box toy. Plus you'll get a bonus disc featuring a Making Of video, a sneak peek at the new AC comic, trailers and the game soundtrack.

So far the CE has only been confirmed for release in the US, where it will cost ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. Those who buy the bundle at Gamestop will get an extra special special jack-in-the-box toy.

The Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Collectors' Edition will be released alongside the standalone game on 16th November, and will be available in both PS3 and Xbox 360 flavours. The game will arrive in Europe four days later.

I look forward to going to the food stand near the Castel Sant'Angelo, run by some clown who charged nearly 4 euro's for a regular size can of Pringles.

Dragonfly

Waiting....
I got it after work. I wasn't planning on getting it until the January sales, but a guy at work told me that Sainsbury's were selling it for £29.99. It's been a good start; a more epic begining than the last one. It's gone straight into action and as I hoped, it looks like we'll be playing more as Desmond. I won't be surprised if a film is made about Ezio's story.

The woman Ezio has sex with is one of the hottest video game characters I've seen to date.

I haven't tried multi-player, yet.

EDIT:

Oh yeah, it looks like the Colosseum is in the game. I'm hoping to crack Chuck Norris' skull there.
