i have seen cafu play- i remember him playing at 2007 with ac milan in the champions league and he is great at crossing and has exceptional stamina. Now when you see dani alves, he has a magnifico cross and is always running showing his stamina. Cafu is obviously the better team player which is shown when he urges people in the dying seconds like he did against france but then again he plays for brazil who at those times had exceptional tactics like barca. In that era, a player like bendtner could have gotten away for being the best player only because of their playmaking and technique in midfield. Every player has their weaknesses but cafu doesn't but for things like speed he is average. When you see dani alves weaknesses, he looks bad like his poor defending and tackling and his diving but other things make up for that like he has impossible stamina and is a very offensive-minded player that loves to cross early.
I agree with your comment saying you never know how truly great a player was if you weren't from his time so you can't watch clips. However watching things like 'messi vs shakhtar donetsk' or 'pele vs red bulls' can make you inherit how good a player actually was.
