PES 2008 The Verdict: Hit or Miss?

Single player...it is the most playable footie game ever.......

Two Player...the gaping worse than ever before AI flaws totally destroy the game and turn it into a farcical laughing stock.


I voted 'Miss', but I know that I am still gonna get hours upon hours of great fun out of this game......but all single player fun. However, two player is what the game is really all about and this year, Konami's complacency, laziness and/or negligence have put paid to PES2008 being a viable 2 player option.

I was excited abt the pre launch publicity abt new AI, e.g shirt pulling and better defence etc..i expected it to be PES 6 with some polishing in gameplay....but i guess konami have done the same error as FIFA, instead of working on improving the previous version with little changes, they have released another version with untested features... at least with PES 6, we gamers knew wot we had in hand ...the new PES is a total let down for me....i dont even want to talk abt the negative sides....
arcade football at best i'd say....hvnt tried FIFA for yrs....i guess PES 2008 will force me to...coz it aint giving me the fun i want when playin a footie game.

i still think fifa08 trumps this.

they made the game look really good before launch but first impression lasts. After playing it for awhile i still think it's a 'miss'.

- the cpu can be either too good or really bad. they dribble like god but stand there and do nothing at times. not running but watching the ball if you execute a thru ball.
- pace and flow is to fast.
- gameplay feels heavy.
- on replays the grass looks like carpet.
- when you use the sprint button or run normally .. they fatigue the same.. fatigue is over exaggerated with players depleting to nothing in less than 75 mins.

they call it next-gen but really there are no improvement except the look and reaction of the players. they seemed to forgo quality of gameplay for this.
i don't get the fun i do like playing pes6. which is a shame because pes always got better each year.

games should hit the mark on release, with the exception of a patch release for minor problems. but this feels like beta testing an incomplete game.

i dare say even the fifa 08 on "PC" is better.

I've only had the PC version for a few days, and at the moment i'm undecided. The fact i'm having to play the game on 'Low Quality' settings due to my computer being low on memory at the moment, meaning no crowd, worse graphics and below-average colour is affecting my view of the game. I've enjoyed some elements, and prefer it to PES5 or 6 (although that isn't high praise as I didn't particularly enjoy either of those games, and have found myself playing an updated PES4 in the meantime), but it has about as many frustrations, so i'm going to leave it until I can play on Medium or High settings, and have downloaded a good patch/option file, before making a final decision, though it does feel like Konami has taken as many steps back as they have forward since PES4.

It could be possible that KONAMI have taken our loyalty to the game for granted and made a shite game because they think we'll like it anyway just because it's PES... So much anticipation, so much disappointment. Would it be out of the question to recall the game and rebuild it?

PES 2008 2 player...hit or miss?

1 player..the game is lovely as you can play at your own pace and spend lots of time trying to pull off nice creative football.

2 player is bloody atrocious as the AI flaws are the worst of any PES in the history of PES....by the time thishas been out a few months you will be getting fucking rugby scores on it. Its Shit, Its Crap, Its Fucking Awful.........Thank Gos I was wise enough to take mine back to the shop.......at least I have not paid for the dubious privilege of Playing MESS2008.

Miss. The fact that I am trying to force myself to like it after a week of having it pretty much tells the story itself. It just doesn't feel like PES anymore; I would of been happier with an updated PES6, better editing features and a few small[/] tweaks in gameplay and graphics - but it just seems like they've changed almost EVERYTHING which made what the game was all about. It's a shame really.

been playin on pc for 1week....feels like more like arcade football than simulation...am with chelsea on half ML matches played....one thg which strikes me is the real big pitch....i would hv prefered a pitch a lil bigger than PES6 but for god's sake, not this big....the game heavily leans towards attack....am playing top player..very hard setting...i have --bagged in like 30 goals in half of the season so far...some matches end in 5-0 thrashing of teams like Dynamo Kiev fc....Shaun wright philips is as fast as lightning on the wing....
- u can make any player run the whole pitch on the wings...dribble and score...
- the game's pace is so fast and is direct football, as soon as cpu gets the ball..direct on goal, can score in 2,3 passes.
- in 1 player mode cpu plays annoying long balls from one side to another...
- any player from any average team can hit spectacular volleys on goal
- scoring from free kicks is kinda easy
- goal keepers are incredebly dumb..thumbling weak shots in goal
- camera is crappy.. in any resolution, Normal camera, medium zoom, i dnt even see the goal when am shooting
- the players seem comical when they are running/sprinting
- goal keeper does some weird kinda thing(turns towords goal then passes) when passing a goal kick to nearest defender
- u can get red carded for real silly fouls
- ball is like made of lead..never lifts off the ground
- penalty taking and stopping is shitty
- navigation becomes annoying after u have played some games

The reason i chose PES over FIFA a few yrs back and never played FIFA since is that PES was more simulation-like and FIFA seemed arcade. The licensing less thg in PES didnt bother me because of the simulation look the game offered. This current one has taken a step backwards.
Am sure many of you will say its not that bad...it is still playable...maybe i'll get used to it...but it is nonetheless a very big disapointment.

To lift ball of the ground, you gotta hit the SHOOT button twice, a quick tap and then depress a little more for power......

However, ball will still list of ground as normal if shot is taken first time.

Unbelievably.....the gamer is not informed of this either in the games manual or in the £10 pice of shit 'DONT BUY IT FOLKS' Piggyback Guide.

PC version - HIT!

I vote it a hit, ive been playing Konami footy since the old Snes ISS delux days and I like this new one. IMO the passing is crisper , off the ball movement of the players is much improved, and the quick and silky players are much better than the Pes 6 version ( PC ) .

The "Team Vision" AI really makes the game a challenge and I have had to change tactics on more than one occasion to keep up. Timing and positional play is the key in this version, just the way I like it.
