For the last of our first batch of released clubs we travel to Poland and take a look at a rivalry which is not your typical derby. Lech Poznan and Wisla Krakow.
Although not as fierce as the derby between Krakow and Cracovia or Poznan and Legia Warsaw, their rivalry comes from being (kosy) a rival of a friend which in Poland in this case is separated into the following: First of all we have “The Great Triad” which consist of (Arka Gdynia, Cracovia and Lech Poznan) then we have “The Three Kings of Big Cities”( Lechia Gdansk, Slask Wroclaw and Wisla Krakow). These friendships/alliances known as Zgody in which the sets of supporters frequently visit each others grounds and its not uncommon to see them share the same stand when their teams meet.
Lech Poznan (Kolejorz The railwaymen) the club was founded in 1922 and were originally called Lutnia Debiec before changing their name several times. From 1930 to 1994 they had close links to the state railway which as a result got them the nickname Kolejorz which means The Railwaymen. Making their debut in Poland’s top division in 1948 they enjoyed their most successful period during the early 1980s and 90s winning the Polish league a total of seven times, the Polish Cup five times and Polish Supercup on six occasions. In recent years they have made regular apperances in both the champions league and Europa League and the their fans have become famous for their goal celebration in which they all turn their backs to the pitch whilst joining arm and jumping up and down in unison, “The Poznan”.
Wisla Krakow (Biala Gwiazda) The white Star were founded in 1906 under their original name TS Wisla are one of Poland’s oldest and most successful clubs. They have won the Ekstraklasa title a massive 13 times, the Polish Cup four time and the Polish Supercup once in 2000-01 a year in which they also recorded their only League cup success. In Europe their greatest achievement came in the European cup back in 1978-79 in which they reached the quarterfinals losing to eventual finalists Malmo. They have won the Intertoto cup three times
1969/1970 and 1973. Wislas most fiercely contested derby is against KS Cracovias. It is a rivalry which dates back over 100 years. Ludwik Gintel who later played for Cracovia referred to the match against Wisla as “Holy War” a phrase which has been incorporated into a song by both
sets of supporters.
