Retour à la gloire
Alright then, perfect time to post my experience as my PS3 died a couple days ago with a headcrash of the HDD. Brilliant, chances are high that the save of the ML is gone and I've only got some shitty pictures taken with my mobile. I'll post them in due time nonetheless.
So here we go ...
You’ll notice while reading through the story that I took some of your advice from this thread when building my teams (honorable mentions to rebelinho, Ali, Silver Surfer and all the others here)
I’ve been playing a while with my favourite team Eintracht Frankfurt, aiming to restore their past glory by bringing in talented young German players (or at least talented players from the Bundesliga) while trying to keep it as realistic as possible. But after I managed to sign Meyer on a free and Goretzka on a cheeky trade for some mediocre player like Marco Russ, who failed miserably at Wolfsburg a few years ago, I decided to start a new Master League. It just felt wrong …
So I decided to set myself the challenge to take AJ Auxerre back where they used to be in the 90s (Winner of the French double in 1996) when I started following European football. Auxerre has been well known for the high quality young players they pumped out (especially in the 90s and the old Guy Roux days). We are talking about the likes of Laurent Blanc, Éric Cantona, Djibril Cissé, Philippe Mexès or Stéphane Guivarc’h. This seemed like a heritage of my liking and a solid ground. And this marked the starting point of my journey to take Auxerre from an unspectacular and boring mid-table Ligue 2 team to the tantalizing side they once were 20 years ago. Some may say that the French Ligue 1 is boring because of the almighty, petrodollar-dripping, boring-beyond-belief dictatorship of PSG, but my aim will be to break their winning streak. As for now ... PSG can go straight to hell. The quality of players they signed is ridiculous. Including a 25m€ deal for Lukaku who is now their third choice striker behind Ibra and Cavani
Notable rules include only signing players till the age of 23, if possible younger promising gems. I allowed myself to sign goalkeeper till the age of 25. I’ll keep an eye on French youngsters and see if I can raise enough money to guide them to my club.
I started with the default ML players (difficulty Pro – raised it to Top Player in the third season), as it brings back memories from the old days and there are still some solid players to be found. Further settings include PA 1 and Basic shooting.
Currently, I’m in the third season of the story, but I’ll give you a rough outline what happened in the first two seasons.
First season it Ligue 2. Sold loads of useless default players straight away to raise some money to afford a 5m€ deal with Porto to bring in Ruben Neves. Got K. Coman on loan as well as one of my wingers. Bargain of the season has to be Embolo (edited him to PES 2016 stats) who I nabbed of Basel for 1,5m€ in winter. Signed a couple good freebies who were affordable and seemed promising: A. Petagna, Ivo Rodrigues, C. Ceballos, Diallo, Romagna, Amini and a couple others that I quickly forgot about. Lost some games to direct opponents (including a 4:1 humiliation by Metz – couldn’t handle their style of 10 low crosses per half) but cruised past most other teams with great consistency. Ended up winning the league by 3 points earning promotion. Got recked in Coupe de France 3:0 by Marseille who were easily two levels above me at that time.
Some of the key learnings:
- Minandinho is a beast despite his average stats. For some reason he is capable of outperforming other strikers with way better OVR. I guess the combination of high Attacking Prowess, Balance and Finishing just suits my style. Together with Petagna these two bombed Ligue 2 to the ground.
- Minandinho, Gellazca and Castolis are the only decent default players.
- The two default keepers are useless.
- The default CBs are abysmal.
- Coman is fast and blessed with great dribbling skills, but lacks a line in his play. No idea how to describe what I mean. You probably get a glimpse … just couldn’t tame him to be as useful as he could potentially be.
- Paccini has ok stats for a RB, but behaves like a truck. Even shit Ligue 2 wingers with 63 OVR have an easy time outmaneuvering him …
- Voleimann seemed half-decent but couldn’t compete with Neves (I raised Neves’ stats to PES2016 level and he still performs way better than you would expect).
- C. Ceballos is like a poor man’s Messi if he’s got a red arrow, otherwise he is just an ordinary SS. Decent player for Ligue 2 nonetheless.
- Romagna has got it all – amazing talent (was sold later on though).
- Ivo Rodrigues is phenomenal. His stats are nothing special, but for some reason it’s ridiculously easy to score brilliant headers with him (he is only like 1,78m) … Great left winger with decent pace, good dribbling skills and always on his toes to find the space behind the defense of the opponent.
- Diallo is rock solid.
- Embolo – no words to describe him, you all know him …
So the first summer transfer window came and I went a bit crazy with round about 8m € to spend. With all the transfer fees that I received, it must have been around 14 or 15m €. Nevertheless, I signed some free players again.
IN (all in a free transfer):
Bjelica (CB/75 OVR), Tiago Rodrigues (CMF/76 OVR), Radosevic (DMF/78 OVR), Pecks (CB/73 OVR), Ederson Moraes (GK/75 OVR), Veretout (CMF/78 OVR)
IN:
A. Correa 3,5m (AMF/76 OVR), L. Vietto 3,6m (SS/78 OVR), Areola 2,6m (GK/76 OVR), Bernat 3m (LB/76 OVR), Tuiloma 1,1m (RB/75 OVR)
OUT: most of the shitty Default players for fees that are not worth mentioning … Got Emanuelson for free the winter before and sold him for 3,5m though.
That's it for now - I'll continue with the first season in Ligue 1 soon. Maybe I can rescue my save from the HDD. Not very likely, but I'll give it a try on weekend.
