I think any external storage device that you connect to the PS3 must be Formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS or it will not be recognised by the PS3. :)

If the images that you you want to use are compressed into a .rar or .zip file then you will need to use programs like WinZip and WinRar to un-compress them.
