8MB vs 8MB connection - still LAG!

Hey!

Wonder if you guys can share some view and thoughts. Me and my friend both have 'upto 8MB' from Bulldog in the UK - and recently we played a few games together, and we experienced lag.

Surely how can this be when both of us got hi speed broadband. We tested out bandwidth it came to around 5MB connection.

We both weren't downloading at all - dedicated bandwidth to the PS2. Additionally, we tried to go on different servers to play, ones in UK, empty servers, empty Italian servers etc..

Still same....anybody know why? anything to do with our router settings?

Could it be my Cable going into the Ps2? coz it is a 10metre cable - will this really affect it so much?

Although the bandwidth is 8MB, what is the upload speed? It is usually capped at 512k

Yeah around that - its capped around 400-500k...

but then that's the same as my friend - we use the same ISP.

I've played lag free with others b4...and i am sure they have lower upload speed

perhaps it's the servers that are running slow. did you try using a less congested server?

Yeah i did, we used servers that had nobody in them, and still will get some lag

It could be down to the fact that an 8mb connection is RADSL (Rate Adaptive digital Subscriber Line) and depending on the time you played will also depend on the amount of people using the line (possibly 50:1 contention ratio). If you played at peak time when everyone was using your line your router would be adapting its rate thus giving you a laggy experience. I've had the same problem with my 8mb Half Life 2 in that it would be laggy at certain times of the day which made me leave my ISP and go back to having a 2mb connection, and now its sweet :)

Lag is impossible to get rid of unless you own your own internet servers and broadband company
