Alan Wake [360]

Well I first heard about this game a long time ago, because of it's supposed brilliant graphics, but only now have I decided to delve deeper into the game, thanks to a bit of help from Dan. The premise of it looks superb.

Alan Wake is a bestselling horror writer. Early on in his career, his fiancée Alice, was his muse. Just prior to meeting her, he had started to have strange dreams which he used as material for his first book. The book was a big success, a dream come true. But then Wake’s fiancée vanished without a trace. Wake was devastated. He couldn't write anymore, his dreams stopped and he began to suffer from insomnia. At the beginning of the game, Wake travels to a sleep clinic to seek treatment for his condition. The secluded clinic is located near the small town of Bright Falls, Washington, far away from the stressful urban lifestyle. Receiving treatment at the clinic, Wake is able to sleep again. At the clinic, he meets a mysterious woman who is the very image of his missing fiancée, uncannily so. At once, his dreams return, this time as terrible nightmares. Wake begins to write again: a new book based on those nightmares. But something is horribly, horribly wrong. Impossibly, the town of Bright Falls starts to change to something awful that bears a close resemblance to Wake’s new book. Wake ends up fighting for his life with a gun and a flashlight in his hands, trying to understand what’s happening.

Seems to be a cross between GTA and Silent Hill. The idea of wandering through the gaming map in pitch black conditions carrying a flashlight is chillingly exhilarating. A lot of sandbox games flop for trying to be such a blatant GTA rip-off attempt, but the added nightmares becoming true and horror element seem to set this game apart. Scheduled for release next year.

The most important factor: optimised for quad-core processors.

This game has promised a hell of a lot since it was announced. Hopefully it won't let anyone down.

PC GAMERS NOTE: This is to be released as a Vista exclusive in order to further advertise the Games For Windows operative but don't be surprised if it is hacked to work with XP.

PC development of Alan Wake has been stopped indefinitely. It is expected on 360 in early 2010.

Official confirmation last month:

Thank you for your continued interest in Alan Wake. It is accurate that we are currently working exclusively on the Xbox360 version of Alan Wake. PC plans are currently open, and therefore it’s safe to say that at least a simultaneous launch with the Xbox version will not happen at this late stage. Remedy has a deep heritage in PC gaming and would love to see a PC version available to its PC followers, ultimately however this decision lies with our publisher.

With all the hype and delays, there's no way this is living up to expectations, is there..?

No. I was hooked until they announced a while back that it was no longer sandbox and was taking a more linear path. Not sure what level of freedom there might be, but it sure as hell won't be any Red Dead Redemption...

Has anyone got or played this yet? I had to go to the City Link depot to collect my limited edition version today - no idea why Amazon sent it via those idiots. Hopefuly the game will be as impressive as the packaging. I doubt I'll properly get into for some time now though because of Red Dead Redemption and the World Cup game.

I've got it and completed it, it's an amazing game. The story is probably one if not the best I've played through this gen!

Great game, looks awesome (even if there is some major tearing at times), cutscenes look good especially they're really well done.

Love the atmosphere, only completed chapter one and done a tiny bit of chapter 2 but im working my way through.

Right, what was the general feeling about this?

It is finally released on PC with all DLC included and graphical improvements next month. Wondering whether to get it straight away or wait.
