Are the 40gb versions worth getting?

I keep hearing that the 60gb which is no longer in sales in the UK in shops, is better than the 40gb and to not bother getting the 40gb, but as I'm about to hopefully get a PS3 in a couple of weeks, what's your views on the 40GB?

Whats the disadvantage of only having 2 USB ports compared to 4? Surely with the PS3 games, there will be very little need to want to play PS2 games anyway? What's this about the card reader?

I'm a little confused as from what I hear, it's like the 40gb is really bad or something, surely not?

I have no problems with my 40gb and never feel the desire to play ps2 games

Sully, as my other thread hasn't been replied to yet, do you have Pro Evo and know if you can have 2 players vs 2 other players?

There are a lot of poor things with the game on PS3.

The good news is that if you get in online, the latest patch has made the game acceptable [except for the replays].

There seems to be poor things on all football games, I guess.

Take Fifa - not even being able to set your buttons to exactly how you like (like on Pro Evo) is for me, an amateur's mistake. People say you have options on Fifa to change them but only a few - you can't set them all differently like you can on Pro Evo - which for me, is terrible from the designers.

I'm safe in saying it's better than Pro Evo 6 on the PS2 then?

I believe the main disadvantages of the 40gb version is that:

* Not backward compatible with PS1 or PS2 games
* Only 2 USB ports instead of 4 on 60/80gb version
* No intergrated wireless card on 40gb that 60/80gb does have

I'm sure there are a few others too.

I guess those disadvantages aren't major - you can always get an external hard drive and connect it up surely, if needs be. Isn't 2 ports enough? And if the games are good on the PS3 there will be no need to play PS1/2 games anyway.

True. For me the wireless aspect would be a major thing though.

You'll have to run an ethernet cable to your router if you have a 40gb. I'd pay the extra for the wireless capability meaning I could just unplug the PS3 and take it to any room in the house and still be able to play online.

If your PS3 is and always will be in the same spot though, it shouldn;t affect you. Easy enough to just keep your PS2 anyway and just have both setup ready to go next to each other. Get a HD TV and then connect the PS3 via HDMI and the PS2 via the scart. Run an ethernet cable from PS3 into port 1 of the router and the PS2 into port 2 of the router. You will then have both set up and ready to go without any need for fiddling about with cables so if you ever have a need to play the PS2 then your good to go. That's what I'd have as I quite like some PS2 games which aren't on the PS3 yet.

This should make it all clear for you my man:

http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/about/specs

when I made the decision of getting a next-gen console my choices were 40 gb ps3 and 20gb X360, cause of budget restrictions, I have a huge ps2 game collection so the 40gb ps3 was a no-no for me, and most of the games are in X360 too, in many cases even better (PES2008) got a X360 and I'm happy with it.

In the few days that have passed since my 40GB came, the only thing I miss is good games. So far there have been few that really grab interest.

The things that differ from the other versions:

* No support for Super Audio CD
* No backwards compatibility
* 2 USB ports instead of 4
* No CompactFlash-, Memory Stick- or SD-ports unit

It does have Wi-fi.

I would prefer a 60gb or 80gb because if your ps2 brokes you can play the ps2 games on ps3

They had to discontinue the 60GB because it wasn't selling really, they cut out a lot of stuff to cut production costs and thus the 40GB was created. I own a 60GB and am delighted with it, a lot of the time I'd have my controller hooked up, my iPod connected and a memory stick or two so only having 2 USB would be weird I think =S. The capability to read SD cards etc under the hidden flap is great as you can connect things like your phone's memory card up to the PS3 if you have the correct adaptor for it (mine came with my memory card so that wasn't a problem). I'm also constantly downloading things like demos, putting music videos, songs, movies etc on to the HDD and I have around 20GB remaining.

My advice would be if you're only looking for the PS3 to basically play your games and a few songs the 40GB will be perfect, but if you really want to go for a kind of machine you can use for almost anything(eg should you decide to install Linux and use the PS3 as a computer as well) and as your entertainment centre basically - the 80GB PS3 is a good choice. The 40GB is great as well it can do almost everything, just a little more limited - people are already installing 250GB hard drives etc into their PS3 so the memory aspect shouldn't be a problem for long once that really comes to the fore.

Also, apparently a Slim PS3 is on the horizon as well, don't know if there is any truth to that though.

Sound geekier than I thought I would.

Good luck, don't get a 360 ;).

yeah I wish they kept the 60gb version for a little while longer.
I reckon they would have sold quite a few with the new titles coming out.
Thank god I had the means to get myself one.
But in all honesty I don't think the 40gb is that bad. It plays next gen games and is also a great blu ray player.
Go for it I say.
