Can the semi-automatic off the ball movement work in accordance to preset directions?
I mean, instead of pressing the R3 button and the player making a vertical run, it sounds rather easy on theory, to assign different preset directions to each individual, similar to the old arrows system of PES5 and PES6. The directions would be generic: north, south, east, west, north-east, north-west, south-east, and south-west. Each individual player could have any of the mentioned preset directions, adding some much needed variety into the off the ball aspect of the game.
For example, if Xavi Hernandez has the "arrow" pointing towards the south, when you select Xavi as the off the ball target, and you press the R3 button, instead of running vertically towards the opponent's penalty area like the rest of the players, Xavi will run backwards into his own half of the pitch or even as far as the defensive line.
On the other hand, Lio Messi could have the "arrow" pointing towards the north-east, which means that when Messi is selected as the off the ball target, when you press the R3 button, Messi will run diagonally towards the opponent's penalty area.
The PES12 manual off the ball movement requires constant directions, which interferes with the direction in which the ball carrier moves and with the direction of passing; I think a lot of gamers would feel more at home with an off the ball system where the direction of movement is preset, therefore offering some of the advantages of manual off the ball movement, but with the easy and more intuitive execution of semi-automatic off the ball movement.
The PES12 off the ball system is a great addition as it is, but I feel that with some minor tweaks it could be twice as good.
